Dow Medical College is a public medical school located in the city of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. It was founded in 1945 and named after British civil servant Sir Hugh Dow, Governor of Sindh. [2]

In 2003, it became a constituent college of the newly formed Dow University of Health Sciences. [3]

History

The Dow Medical College was established in Hyderabad in the 1945. It was relocated to Karachi by Sir Hugh Dow, governor of Sindh. Until 1947, it was an affiliate of University of Bombay. After the independence of India, it was under the University of Sindh. After the University of Karachi was founded, it became its affiliate. It was in 2003 when the Dow University of Health Sciences was established as an independent institution, with Dow Medical College and two other colleges being put under its umbrella. [4] [5]

Dow University of Health Sciences launched its web-based Continuing Medical Education Program named the "e-CME Program for the Family Physicians". [6]

Shoaib Tauheed MBBS, M Phil., MCPS, FCPS (1960–2007) was a professor, medical doctor, researcher and an author from Pakistan. He is widely known for his contributions in the field of Physiology and Medicine. Besides practicing clinical medicine he served as a professor and Head of the Department of Physiology in Dow Medical College, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi. Since the establishment of the Dow University of Health Sciences, Prof. Tauheed was appointed chairman of the Physiology Department. He was also one of the members of the Curriculum Revision Committee of the Higher Education Commission, and was involved in expanding and conducting Continuing Medical Education courses at DUHS He also served as the Head of Physiology Department of Sindh Medical College, Karachi. He is still the first and only Pakistani to be a member of the American Physiological Society. Considered by many as the most favorite and popular professor among medical students.

Rahimtoola remained the 10th Principal of Dow Medical College Karachi in 1984. He was also Medical Superintendent of the Civil Hospital in Karachi. The Dow University encompasses the Professor Shamsuddin Rahimtoola Digital Library named in his honor.

Shahbudin Rahimtoola was a cardiologist based in Los Angeles, United States. He served as a Distinguished Professor at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Rahimtoola was credited for his contribution to two clinical syndromes namely the hibernating myocardium and 'prosthetic valve-mismatch'.

Javed Iqbal Kazi (1955–2014) was a Pakistani pathologist specialized in renal pathology, professor and chairman of Histopathology at Karachi Medical and Dental College, Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation, Dr. Ziauddin Hospitals & National Institute of Blood Diseases, and served as Dean of medicine of University of Karachi. He was also the board member of Journal of Pakistan Medical Association since 2005. He established the department of Histopathology at Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation, Karachi, in 1995 and is the pioneer of Renal and Transplant Pathology in Pakistan.
