James Day, an El Paso historian, said that downtown's main business area was originally centered between Second Street and San Francisco Street. At a later point,[ when? ] the main business area was centered on Stanton Street and Santa Fe. In the late 1800s, most of the white American residents lived to the north of the non-white areas, living in brick residences along Magoffin, Myrtle, and San Antonio streets. Hispanic American residents lived in an area called Chihuahuita ("little Chihuahua"), which was located south of Santa Fe and west of Second.

Several African Americans and around 300 Chinese Americans also lived in Chihuahuita. Many of the Chinese Americans built railroads in the El Paso area. [1] El Segundo Barrio is another historic neighborhood in the downtown area. [2]

The Texas Eighth Court of Appeals is located in downtown El Paso. [3] The United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, sitting in El Paso, is located in downtown. The years 2011–2012 mark the first survey–census ever conducted for Downtown El Paso, which identified key demographics and now benchmarks to move downtown revitalization forward.

The key census type information targeted employers, employees, and households in the downtown area about who eats, shops, and plays in downtown El Paso. This information was shared with entrepreneurs and companies evaluating business investment opportunities in the downtown area and property owners seeking new tenants to better target their marketing, recruitment and outreach efforts. [4] Downtown El Paso is part of District 8. [5] Currently, the district is represented by Cissy Lizarraga. [6]

Education

El Paso Independent School District provides K-12 educational services. It has its headquarters in Downtown, moving there in 2021. [7] The headquarters were previously on the grounds of El Paso International Airport. [8]

El Paso Public Library operates the Main Library in downtown area. [9]

The Consulate-General of Mexico in El Paso is located in downtown. [10]

Downtown Austin Neighborhood in Austin, Texas

Downtown Austin is the central business district of Austin, Texas. Downtown is located on the north bank of the Colorado River. The approximate borders of Downtown include Lamar Boulevard to the west, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the University of Texas at Austin to the north, Interstate 35 to the east, and Lady Bird Lake to the south.

Andress High School is a public high school located on the northeast side of El Paso, Texas. The school serves about 2,000 students in the El Paso Independent School District. It is located in the Sun Valley neighborhood at the intersection of Sun Valley Drive and Mackinaw Street. Andress High is currently the northernmost of EPISD's ten comprehensive high schools, serving the portion of Northeast El Paso between the Franklin Mountains and McCombs Street and north of Woodrow Bean Transmountain Road west of Girl Scout Way and Fairbanks Drive east of it, up to the New Mexico state line. Virtually all of the northern half of the Andress attendance zone, that is, north of Loma Real Avenue, is undeveloped land, most of it slated for future residential development. A new high school, as yet unnamed, which will serve what is now the portion of the Andress attendance zone north of the Patriot Freeway to the New Mexico state line, is in the planning stages, and was originally slated to be built using funding from a 2007 bond issue; however, in 2014 it was decided by the EPISD board of managers that development of the area did not yet justify a new high school and the funds set aside for its construction were reallocated. The money allocated went to Franklin High School.

Stephen F. Austin High School is a high school in El Paso, Texas. Austin opened in 1930. It is part of the El Paso Independent School District. The school's mascot is a golden panther named "Henry." Austin High School is located in the heart of historic Central El Paso and serves the Central community.

Harold Joseph Rahm was a Catholic priest and Jesuit, who became well known for his work with gangs and inner-city youth in El Paso, Texas, US. From there he went to Campinas, Brazil, where he extended his efforts at prevention and treatment of drug addiction and received wide acclaim for his initiatives.

Chihuahuita, Texas Neighborhood of El Paso, Texas, United States

Chihuahuita is a neighborhood in El Paso, Texas. It has also been known as the "First Ward." It is considered the oldest neighborhood in the city. It has also suffered through extreme poverty in its history. It is currently on the Most Endangered Historic Places list as compiled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is located on the border of the Rio Grande at the Mexico–United States border. For most of the twentieth century, the name Chihuahuita was used to refer to all of southern El Paso, often including El Segundo Barrio. In 1991, Chihuahuita was designated as a historic district by the city of El Paso.

Duranguito

Duranguito is an historic neighborhood in El Paso, Texas. It is located in the greater Union Plaza district and is located on the south side of Downtown El Paso near the neighborhoods of El Segundo Barrio and Chihuahuita. It is considered to be one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso, and it officially became an organized residential area in 1859. The neighborhood houses a number a historic buildings, the oldest dating back to 1879. It is often considered to be the birthplace of the city of El Paso.
