Dragon Group is a group of garment factories and other companies in Bangladesh. The group produces mainly for the international market and exports to more than 30 countries, especially the United States and Canada. [5] Its subsidiary Dragon Sweater employs more than few thousand workers and in 2018 was the most traded stock on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. [6] [7]

Organisation

Mostafa Golam Quddus, a former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), is the group's chairman and his son Mostafa Quamrus Sobhan is the Managing Director. [8]

History

Cheung Hing Sweater was the first Dragon Group sweater factory to be established. It was founded in the 1980s with 50 Chinese technicians, about 300 machines and about 600 employees.

In 2008, 2 directors of Rupali Insurance were fined by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) for violation of securities law in connection with the company's financial statements for the 2006 business year. [9] In 2005, an inspection of Garment factories including Dragon Sweater found electrical and structural findings, those included cables directly laid on floors with proper safety, sufficient exile capacity through exile doors and the absence of sprinklers. [10]

Dragon Sweater and Spinning's IPO was approved in December 2015, [11] and since the first quarter of 2016 it is listed at the Dhaka and Chittagong Stock Exchanges. A special audit by the BSE later found that more than half of the money collected in this initial offering had not been spent in violation of securities rules, [12] for which the company was fined. [13]

In 2018, the BSEC found that Dragon Sweater had not violated securities rules for 2016 and 2017. [14] Later that year, trading of Dragon Sweater stocks was restricted due to abnormal price hikes. [15] The restrictions were lifted after 24 days, with the BSEC saying corporate disclosure and other factors had improved. [16]

In 2019, Mostafa Qamrus Sobhan filed a petition asking for a six-months ban on activities of Nirapon, an alliance formed by international clothing companies to oversee building inspection on the lines of the Bangladesh Accord, at the Bangladesh High Court. [17] According to the petition's lawyer, the aim was to include Nirapon under the common platform of the RMG Sustainability Council. [18] With the ban on activities still active, Nirapon left Bangladesh in 2020, laying off most of its staff, and said it would continue its activities from North America. [19]

In February 2020, the central bank of Bangladesh found that Janata Bank had rescheduled Dragon Group loans with collateral payment, which was done as per banking regulations. [20]

Like other textile factories in Bangladesh, Dragon Group was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. [21] However, by August, Dragon Sweater factories were again "fully booked until the end of September". [22] Between March and May of that year, Dragon Sweater laid off around 50 of its workers. Many of those dismissed had earlier protested for the payment of a month's due wage. Organised by the Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Center, they continued to protest, leading to the signing of an agreement with Dragon Group to pay part of the due wages by November 7. The Group then broke that deal. [23] The dispute was finally settled after an intervention by Labour Minister Monnujan Sufian in December. [24]

Dragon Group's orders were up by 20 percent in 2022. [25]

Kutubuddin Ahmed is a Bangladeshi businessman who is the founder and chairman of the Envoy Group, a conglomerate which operates in multiple sectors, with major operation in the apparel industry. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh. In 2015 he is a member of the executive committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh, and a director of the Chittagong Stock Exchange.

Noman Group is one of the largest Bangladeshi conglomerates in the textiles and garments sector. Its companies export annually about $1 billion in textile and garment products around the world, and employ about 70,000 people. Noman Group produces yarns, fabrics, home textile, bed covers, curtain, comforters, quilt covers, denim and towels.

Mohammad Fazlul Azim is a Bangladeshi industrialist, business magnate and former politician. He is the chairman of Azim Group, a leading industrial conglomerate and exporter in Bangladesh with business concerns in Garments, Steel, Engineering, Agro and various other sectors. He last served as an independent member of parliament of the Jatiya Sangsad. Azim was the only independent lawmaker in the parliament during the 9th Jatiya Sangsad. He also served in the parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BGMEA is a nationwide trade organization of garments manufacturers in Bangladesh and is located in the capital city of Dhaka. It plays a pivotal role in the country's earning sector of foreign trades.

The Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Centre (GWTUC) is a trade union federation of garment workers in Bangladesh. It is one of the largest trade unions in that sector, with more than 20 factory trade unions affiliated to it. It has enough members to be formally recognised as a trade union, but does not have that status, as is not uncommon for left-oriented unions in Bangladesh. Politically, GWTUC is aligned with the Communist Party of Bangladesh.

The National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) is a registered national trade union federation of garment workers in Bangladesh. With 87 registered factory unions, it ifs considered one of the four main federations of garment workers' unions. NGWF is the initiator and a member of the Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity Council and a member of the Bangladesh Center for Workers' Solidarity. It is affiliated with the IndustriALL Global Union and one of the signatories of the Bangladesh Accord.

The Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity Council (BGWUC) is a national trade union centre in Bangladesh. The centre unites 21 garment worker trade union federations.

Deshbandhu Group is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka. Golam Mostafa is the Chairperson and Golam Rahman is the Managing Director of Deshbandhu Group. It headquarters in Mostafa Centre, Banani, is located inside a residential neighborhood.

National Tea Company Limited is a Bangladeshi state owned tea company based in Dhaka. Sheikh Kabir Hossain, a relative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is the chairman of the company. Mr. Syed Shahriyar Ahsan is a Director of the company. Syed is the Managing Director of Sadharan Bima Corporation of Bangladesh (SBC). He was nominated as a Director of the Company from Sadharan Bima Corporation in October 01, 2016. Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, chairman of Padma Bank, is a shareholder director of the company representing Finex Software Limited.

Mohammadi Group is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka with a focus on the garments industry. It was founded by Anisul Huq. Rubana Huq is the managing director of Mohammadi Group. Navidul Haq is a director of the Mohammadi Group.

DBL Group, formerly known as Dulal Brothers Limited, is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka with a focus on the garments industry. The company has received investments from International Finance Corporation, German Investment Corporation, and Swedfund. It has invested to make its factories more green.
