Driver's Village is an auto row in Cicero, New York, near Syracuse, New York, United States. It is housed in a former shopping mall which was known as Penn-Can Mall. Opened on March 28, 1976, Penn-Can Mall was the first enclosed mall on the north end of Syracuse, and the fourth mall to be built in the entire metropolitan area. It was constructed by the Winmar Company of Seattle, Washington, and had room for 86 stores. At the mall's inception, only 28 stores were open, but the other spaces quickly followed, followed by even more during an expansion in 1986, putting the mall's store count to 121. Anchor stores of the mall included Hills, Sears, and Chappell's. After a period of decline in the 1990s, brought on by competition from newer malls in the Syracuse area, Penn-Can Mall closed in 1996. The structure was partially demolished and reopened in 2000 as Driver's Village.

Building design

Penn-Can Mall opened in 1976.^[1] It was built in a straight line, and later it was in a "T" shape following the expansion. Originally, it was anchored by Sears, with a Hills added at the opposite end in 1983; another wing with Chappell's was added in 1986. Local department stores Addis & Company and Dey Brothers also had junior-anchor locations, and the mall included a three-screen movie theater.

Wilmorite entered a partnership with the Eagan family, the mall's original owners, in 1989.^[2] The Wilmorite company built another mall, Great Northern Mall in Clay, in 1988. Both Sears and Chappell's moved to Great Northern, with Steinbach and Caldor replacing their respective stores at Penn-Can. The Pyramid Companies opened its Carousel Center nearby in 1990, further increasing competition against Penn-Can.^[2] After Steinbach closed, it was replaced with a Burlington Coat Factory in 1993.^[2] Caldor replaced the Chappell's a year later, following the opening of Caldor stores at other Wilmorite properties.^[2]

In 1994, Wilmorite announced plans to demolish the main mall structure, leaving the Burlington Coat Factory, Hills, and Caldor stores. Under these plans, the mall itself would be replaced with a power center which would have included an unnamed big box home improvement store and a movie theater operated by Regal Cinemas.^[2]

The mall itself closed in 1996,^[3] leaving only the Hills store operational until that chain closed in 1999, and was replaced by Ames, which remained open until 2002, and the Burlington, which remained until 2016.^[4]

Conversion to Driver's Village

In early 2000, local area auto dealer Roger Burdick purchased the old mall and proceeded to turn it into an auto mall, known as Driver's Village.^[5] With a design by Robertson Strong Apgar Architects, the old Sears and Ames wings were demolished, and the rest of the mall was gutted, save for the hallway and the eastern portion of the newer wing from 1986. Ames closed in 2002 and was turned into a used car showroom. The rest of the mall has been converted into showrooms and service centers for 16 auto brands.

Retail is still present in Driver's Village which includes a cafe, a catering company, a children's party location, as well as real estate, insurance, financial and tax service offices. Aspen Athletic Club and the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame are also located there.

Manufacturers

There are currently 16 new car franchises connected to the main building at Driver's Village. These include Audi, Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Kia, Lincoln, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Ram and Volkswagen. Additionally, there are four franchises in separate buildings on the property: BMW, Hyundai, Lexus and Toyota.

The University Mall, often referred to as the U-Mall, is an enclosed shopping mall in South Burlington, Vermont. The name refers to its proximity to the University of Vermont. At 610,693 square feet (56,735 m²), it is the largest shopping mall in Vermont and is the only enclosed mall in the entire state in general and the Burlington metropolitan area in particular following the closure of CityPlace Burlington in 2022. ShoppingTown Mall is an abandoned regional shopping mall in Dewitt, New York. First opened as an open-air shopping center in 1954, it was enclosed in 1973 and remained a major shopping center before no longer being part of Dewitt in March 2020 to make way for a new $400 million development, which will be named District East. Much of the existing mall will be demolished for a phased development that includes a substantial residential component, a movie theater complex, retail space and offices, as well as new sidewalks, bike paths, walking trails, and large park and green space that will serve as a spearhead to the Empire State Trail.

Latham Circle Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located adjacent to the Latham Circle in Latham, New York. Built in 1957 as Latham Corners Shopping Center, the mall was renovated several times in its history, most notably in 1977 when it became a fully enclosed and temperature-controlled shopping mall.

Seaview Square Mall was a shopping mall located in Ocean Township, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It has been repurposed as a power center and was renamed Seaview Square Shopping Center in 2012. The 856,000-square-foot (79,500 m²) mall, located at the intersection of Route 35 and Route 66, was originally constructed in 1977 as an indoor mall. It faced stiff competition from the more upscale Monmouth Mall, located five miles (8 km) further north on Route 35 in Eatontown. One of its four anchors never opened, and several smaller stores, and Stern's and Steinbach, two of its anchors, were victims of the then-indoor mall's then-state of decline. The mall was later redeveloped into a shopping center with Target, Costco, Burlington, Home Sense, Siera Trading, Marshalls, Home Goods, Petsmart, Starbucks, and others.

Camillus Plaza and now known as Camillus Commons, was a shopping mall in Camillus, New York.

Chappell's was a family-owned department store chain based in Syracuse, New York. It opened in 1896 and remained in business until 1994. At its peak, it operated ten stores in the Syracuse area, Cortland, Watertown and Massena. In no particular order, malls that had a Chappell's store included Great Northern Mall ; Western Lights Plaza ; Northern Lights ; Shoppingtown Mall ; Penn-Can Mall ; Carousel Center ; Shop City Plaza ; Fingerlakes Mall ; Seneca Mall ; Salmon Run Mall. There was also a stand alone store in downtown Syracuse.

The Mall at Whitney Field is a shopping mall located off of Route 2 near the junction with Interstate 190 in Leominster, Massachusetts. The mall opened in 1967 and was renovated and renamed in 2004. The mall's anchor stores are Burlington, Gardner Outlet Furniture, and JCPenney, with one vacant anchor last occupied by Sears. The mall was previously owned by Walton Street Capital LLC of Chicago until May 2013 when Vintage Real Estate acquired the mall with plans to renovate and turnaround the struggling mall. As of January 8, 2020, the mall is now owned by Hull Property Group.

Harbor Square, formerly Shore Mall, is a shopping plaza in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey in the United States on U.S. Route 40/U.S. Route 322 originally known as "Searstown". The plaza is accessible from Exit 36 off the Garden State Parkway. The plaza is owned by Aetna Realty. The plaza has a gross leasable area of 337,423 ft², formerly 620,000 ft² when it was a mall, located on 73 acres (300,000 m²) of land. The plaza's anchor stores include Boscov's, Restaurant Depot and Proshot Pickleball.

Capital City Mall is a 608,911-square-foot (56,569.7 m²) regional shopping mall located approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of Harrisburg in Lower Allen Township, Pennsylvania. It is one of three enclosed malls in the immediate Harrisburg area, and is the only enclosed mall in Harrisburg's western suburbs. The anchor stores are Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, Macy's, Sportsman's Warehouse, Dave & Buster's, and H&M. The mall is owned and operated by PREIT.

St. Lawrence Centre was a shopping mall in Massena, New York, United States. It includes one anchor store, JCPenney.

Richland Town Center is a power center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located on U.S. Route 219 at Elton Road and Theatre Drive. The center opened in 2004 on the site of the former Richland Mall. Existing from 1974 to 1998, Richland Mall was an enclosed shopping mall whose anchor stores were Sears, Kmart, and Penn Traffic; Sears later became Hills and then Ames, while Penn Traffic later became Hess's and then The Bon-Ton. Richland Mall was shuttered in 1998 after losing business to The Johnstown Galleria which opened in 1992. Richland Mall was then torn down and redeveloped as a strip mall, which features Walmart, TJ Maxx/HomeGoods, Best Buy, and Ulta as its anchor stores.

Florin Towne Centre is an outdoor shopping center in the unincorporated area of Parkway-South Sacramento in Sacramento County, California, United States, in the Sacramento area. It opened in 2008 on the site of the old Florin Mall, which closed and was demolished in 2006. The 484,500 square feet (45,010 m²) center is anchored by AutoZone, Chuze Fitness, PetSmart, US Foods CHEF'STORE, and Walmart.

Champlain Centre North is a shopping mall in Plattsburgh, New York. Opened in 1987, the mall features tenants open & closed, like JCPenney, Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, DSW, Hobby Lobby, Kohl's, Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Ross Stores, Old Navy, Five Below, Ames, Toys R Us, Kmart, Sears, Gander Mountain, and a Regal Entertainment Group-owned movie theater.

The Salmon Run Mall is a shopping center located in Watertown, New York. The mall features JCPenney, Best Buy, Burlington, Hobby Lobby, and Best Buy, in addition to a Regal Cinemas.
