Durga Charan Banerjee (1898-1952) was a Bengali-speaking Indian jurist and a member of parliament of the first Lok Sabha. [1]

Early life and education

He was born to Anukul Charan Banerjee in Midnapore in January, 1898. He was educated at the Midnapore College and at the Scottish Church College. [2] Later he studied criminal law at the University of Calcutta. He married Triguna Debi in April 1913. [1]

Career

He had started out as a criminal lawyer. Later he served on the panel of public prosecutors. He had also worked as the Municipal Commissioner for the Midnapore municipality in 1921. Later he worked as the manager of the Diamond Amateur Theatre in Midnapore. He was related with the activities of the Ramakrishna Mission, Sebashram and hospital in Midnapore. [1]

He was elected from the formerly named Lok Sabha constituency of Midnapore-Jhargram in the first Lok Sabha elections in 1952 as a candidate for the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. [1]

Jharkhande Rai was an Indian Communist politician. He belonged to Bhumihar community and was an eminent leader and one of the pillars of the Communist Party of India in Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh. He was elected to the 4th Lok Sabha, 5th Lok Sabha and 7th Lok Sabha in 1967, 1971 and 1980 from Ghosi constituency. He held the seat till he died on 17 March 1984. Till the late 1980s, the communist movement in eastern U.P. was a major force to reckon with. Ram Chandra Vikal Gurjar was a freedom fighter. He was an agriculture minister and was elected twice as a Member of Parliament as well as a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly. He had charge of Jammu and Kashmir during the governments of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He was also a well known yoga teacher. Vikal was influenced by the ideology of the Arya Samaj from childhood and participated in the freedom movement from his student days. An agriculturist, Vikal championed the cause of the farmers, labourers and backward classes, and was instrumental in implementing various social welfare measures such as getting irrigation rates reduced and land revenue written off.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jhargram Raj</span>

Jhargram Raj was a zamindari which occupied a position in Bengal region of British India. The zamindari came into being during the later part of the 16th century when Man Singh of Amer was the Dewan/Subahdar of Bengal (1594–1606). Their territory was centered around present-day Jhargram district. Jhargram was never an independent territory since the chiefs of the family held it basically as the zamindars of the British Raj in India after Lord Cornwallis's Permanent Settlement of 1793. Although its owners were both rich and powerful, with the chiefs of the family holding the title of Raja, the Jhargram estate was not defined as a Princely State with freedom to decide its future course of action at the time of Indian independence in 1947. Later, the Vice-Roy of India agreed to recognize Jhargram as "Princely State" after the Second World War, but the proposal taken back as the British had decided to give independence to India.
