Dwight Quintero (born 20 January 1994) is a Trinidadian professional footballer who plays as a striker for TT Pro League club Central FC.

Quintero's professional career began with Central FC in his native Trinidad and Tobago, where he made his first-team debut in 2013, at the age of 19.

Early life

Quintero was born in Blanchisseuse, Trinidad and Tobago and attended El Dorado East Secondary School, where he repeated his final year to improve himself academically prior to pursuing a career in football. Dwight has stated that his aunt, Tamara, was a significant influence on his early football career as she encouraged and provided him with confidence to have higher aspirations. [1]

In March 2009, Quintero joined the youth program at local club Joe Public and represented the Eastern Lions for three seasons. In 2011, Quintero led El Dorado East's Blue Thunder in his final season with 12 goals, [2] [3] [4] [5] which included two hat-tricks, [6] [7] and the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) East Zone title. After Joe Public withdrew from the TT Pro League following the 2010–11 season, Dwight made a switch to fellow Pro League club North East Stars in 2012 and played in their reserve team for two years. Club career

Central FC

At the age of 19, Quintero signed a two-year contract with Central FC of the TT Pro League in July 2013. [1] [8] Two months later, he scored a 67th-minute goal in his league debut to give the Sharks a win over defending champions Defence Force in the 2013–14 league opener. [9] In October 2013, Quintero scored in the final of the First Citizens Cup to give Central FC its first major trophy in a 2–1 win over Defence Force. [10] He scored two more goals in the next three league matches against Police on 25 October and a week later against North East Stars on 1 November. [11] [12] Quintero continued his goal scoring form in November with five goals against National Super League clubs Joe Public and 1.FC Santa Rosa, respectively, during the TOYOTA Classic and FA Trophy competitions. [13] [14] He later scored a first-half equaliser for the Sharks in the FA Trophy final against W Connection on 18 December. [15] However, after the arrival of Willis Plaza the next month, [16] playing time was sparse for the remainder of the season. Quintero finished his first professional season with three league goals and 11 goals in all competitions.

International career

Quintero has represented Trinidad and Tobago on various levels of international competition, having been capped for the under-17 [17] and under-20 national teams. [18]

Youth teams

He began his international career for the under-17 team during qualification for the 2011 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, where he made three second-half substitute appearances. [19] [20] [21] In February 2011, during the continental competition, Quintero made his first start for the Soca Warriors against hosts Jamaica. However, after a lackluster first-half performance he was an early second-half substitution. [22] He went on to make late appearances in the team's final two matches against Guatemala and Canada. [23] [24]

In August 2012, Quintero made three scoreless starts as a lone striker for the under-20 team during their first round of qualification for the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. [25] However, in November 2012, he made just one appearance for the Soca Warriors, which witnessed the team finish a disappointing bottom in their final qualification group. [26]

The 2012 Trinidad and Tobago League Cup was the thirteenth season of the First Citizens Cup, which is the league cup competition for Trinidad and Tobago teams competing in the TT Pro League. Caledonia AIA entered as the cup holders having defeated T&TEC by a score of 2–1 in the 2011 final. Continuing from previous seasons, the slogan for the year's league cup was No Room for Losers and was sponsored by First Citizens Bank for the twelfth consecutive year. To keep with the tag-line, the year's edition only rewarded prizes to the cup winners and runner-up.

The 2014 Trinidad and Tobago Goal Shield was the fifth season of the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield, which is a knockout tournament competition for Trinidad and Tobago teams competing in the TT Pro League. W Connection entered as the cup holders having defeated North East Stars 4–3 in a penalty shootout in the 2013 final. Continuing from previous seasons, the competition not only allowed the winner and runner-up healthy purses at the end of the tournament, but more so give an added incentive for more goals to be scored throughout the tournament. In particular, the winner of the competition was awarded TT$30,000 plus an additional TT$3,000 for every goal scored in the final, TT$2,000 for every goal in the semifinals, and TT$1,000 for each goal scored in the quarterfinals. Whereas, the runner-up was awarded TT$10,000 plus TT$1,500 for every goal scored in the final, TT$1,000 for every goal in the semifinals, and TT$500 for each goal scored in the quarterfinals.

The history of the TT Pro League has its roots spanning back to the 1970s and 1980s when Trinidad and Tobago experienced an upswing in support for its domestic football. Several of the national team players featured for Defence Force during its dominance of the National League, which included the Teteron Boys becoming the first Trinidadian and only second club from CONCACAF to accomplish the continental treble in 1985. In addition, the national team also rose to prominence in the late 1980s after falling short by one match of qualification for the nation's first FIFA World Cup in 1989. Optimism for the growth and community interest of football in Trinidad and Tobago was at an all-time high. However, the early 1990s would mark a low point in Trinidad and Tobago football. In 1993, after a streak of poor performances, the Soca Warriors gave its worst ever showing in the 1993 Caribbean Cup after finishing a disappointing third, which was preceded by an early exit from its '94 for Sure campaign to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup hosted in the United States.
