Dynamo Stadium in Kharkiv, Ukraine was the home ground of several Kharkiv professional football clubs, such as FC Metalist Kharkiv, FC Helios Kharkiv and FC Kharkiv. The stadium is also used for home matches of the Ukraine national team for Rugby League matches.

The stadium was built in 1931 and was used by teams from Kharkiv in the Soviet Championship, including FC Dynamo Kharkiv and FC Lokomotyv Kharkiv.

The stadium was damaged during World War II, and later reconstructed. Lokomotiv Kharkiv, the predecessor to FC Metalist Kharkiv in the Soviet Top League, used the stadium until they moved to Metalist Stadium. The stadium was repaired again in 1971, and was practically idle until 1997.

Until 2008, the stadium was used by FC Helios Kharkiv, who were leasing it from the municipal administration. At the beginning of 2008, the facility was sold to FC Kharkiv under the condition that the club would reconstruct it. It was closed down for renovations in late 2008, forcing FC Helios to move out of Kharkiv. FC Kharkiv returned to the stadium in April 2009, upon the conclusion of the main phase of renovations. Founded in 1925, FC Metalist Kharkiv had worked its way up the rungs of the Soviet football system, eventually being promoted to the Soviet Top League in 1960. After a difficult period which included relegation, Metalist was promoted to the Top League again in 1982, where it remained until the league's dissolution.

The 2008–09 Ukrainian Premier League season was the eighteenth since its establishment. The league was restructured and split off from the Professional Football League of Ukraine. It was officially named as the EpiCentre Championship of Ukraine in football.

The 2009–10 Ukrainian Premier League season was the nineteenth since its establishment and second since its reorganization. Dynamo Kyiv were the defending champions, having won their 13th league title. A total of 16 teams participated in the league, 14 of which participated in the 2008–09 season, and two of which were promoted from the Ukrainian First League.

The 2010–11 Ukrainian Premier League season was the 20th since its establishment and third since its reorganization. Shakhtar Donetsk were the defending champions, having won their 5th league title. A total of sixteen teams participated in the competition, fourteen of them contested the 2009–10 season while the remaining two were promoted from the Ukrainian First League.

Klasychne derby, or the Ukrainian football rivalry is the football match between the two top Ukrainian clubs Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk. The game between those two clubs is a focal point of each football season in Ukraine. Due to war, at least three of their scheduled fixtures were scratched in 1941 and 2014. Since 2014, Shakhtar sometimes plays in Kyiv due to the Russian aggression which technically turned the rivalry into a city derby.

The 2011–12 Ukrainian Premier League season was the 21st since its establishment and fourth since its reorganisation. The season began on 8 July 2011 when newly promoted PFC Oleksandria visited FC Vorskla Poltava. FC Shakhtar Donetsk were the defending champions, having won their 6th league title in the 2010–11 season and they successfully defended their title by winning the championship in the last round of the competition.

The 2015–16 Ukrainian First League was the 25th since its establishment. The competition commenced on 26 July 2015 with eight matches. The competition had a winter break which began after Round 18 on November 22. The competition resumed on 26 March 2016 and completed on 1 June 2016.

The 2015–16 Ukrainian Cup was the 25th annual season of Ukraine's football knockout competition. The schedule of games for clubs from the First and Second League was confirmed on 3 July 2015 at a session of the Central Council of the Professional Football League of Ukraine.

Ukrainian football clubs have participated in European football competitions since 1965, when in the 1965–66 season, Dynamo Kyiv took part in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup – the first Ukrainian and the first Soviet club to do so. In total, 17 clubs have represented Ukraine in European competition, among which 7 also previously represented the Soviet Union.

The 2018–19 Ukrainian First League is the 28th since its establishment. The competition began on 21 July 2018 with the match between Prykarpattia Ivano-Frankivsk and Balkany Zorya. The competition was in recess for a winter break which started after the completion of Round 18 on 18 November 2018. The competition resumed on 24 March 2019 and expected to end 25 May 2019.
