E. R. Eswaran is an Indian politician and entrepreneur from Tamil Nadu. As of 21 March 2013 he is the General Secretary of the Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi party and as of 2021, is a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Tiruchengode constituency.

Early life and education

Eswaran was born at Kokarayanpettai, near Thiruchengode in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. He is a member of the Kongu Vellalar Gounder community and his family are involved in agriculture. [1]

He received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Government Engineering College, Salem. He then began his business in Assam and later moved on to Chennai where he entered the construction and infrastructure business. He soon "established himself as one of the premier builders in Chennai, promoting many apartments and townships". He also has business interests in the manufacture and export of clothing, which has caused him to travel abroad extensively. [1]

He is fluent in Tamil, English and Hindi. [1]

He was secretary of "Kongu Nanbargal Sangam" around 2001. [2]

Political career

On 21 March 2013, Eswaran was one of the founders of Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi, and is General Secretary of the party. He is member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Tiruchengode constituency.The presence of KMDK in DMK-led alliance has worked in favour of DMK. E.R. Eswaran won by a margin of 2,862 votes in Tiruchengode. [3] He contested the May 2009 Lok Sabha Elections as a KMDK candidate from the Coimbatore constituency [4] and came third, securing more than one hundred thousand votes. He also came third in the 2009 by election for the Thondamuthur Assembly Constituency. [5] [6] [7] [8] For Lok sabha elections 2014, he contested in Pollachi Constituency as the KMDK candidate with BJP alliance. E.R. Eswaran secured 2,76,118 votes.

Tiruchengode is a selection grade municipality located in western part of southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for the ancient hilltop Ardhanareeswarar Temple, dedicated to the unique combined male-female form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. This important place of pilgrimage is mentioned in the Tamil work Silapathikaram as 'Nedulkundru' and is celebrated in the hymns of Saivite saints. The equally famous Chenkottu Velavar Temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan, is situated on the same hill. As of 2011, the town had a population of 95,335. As per 2011 population, Tiruchengode is the largest city in Namakkal district. It is also famous for rig business.

The thirteenth legislative assembly election, of Tamil Nadu was held on 8 May 2006. It was held for all 234 constituencies to elect the government in the state for the following five years. The votes were counted three days later on 11 May 2006 and all the results were out by the end of the day. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led (DMK) front won the elections, with the DMK emerging as the single-largest party with 96 seats, and its leader, M Karunanidhi was sworn in as Chief Minister for a fifth and final term. This election marked the first time the state saw a hung assembly with no party gaining a majority of its own. As a result, DMK formed a minority government with its allies, which is the first in the state since the 1952 election. 13th Assembly was instituted due to this election.

T. M. Kaliyannan Gounder was an Indian politician who served as a member of the Provisional Parliament of India and as a member of the Legislative Assembly MLA, Member of the Legislative Council MLC of Tamil Nadu. He was the last surviving member of the first parliament of India and was one of the few surviving members of the first assembly of Tamil Nadu State. He played a crucial role in the development of Gandhi Ashram at Tiruchengode and in nurturing Gandhian values among the people of Tamil Nadu.

The Fourteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members from 234 constituencies in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Results were released on 13 May 2011. Two major parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced the election as coalitions of multiple political parties: DMK front consisted of 8 parties and the AIADMK of 11 parties. Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which had contested the previous elections independently, allied with the AIADMK coalition. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boycotted the election following a disagreement with Jayalalithaa over seat-sharing. The outgoing Karunanidhi government was noted for the construction of new assembly building in Chennai, execution of various developmental projects, and implementation of programmes including free health care for the poor and issuance of a range of freebies such as color television to all. However, these were heavily overshadowed by other major issues such as incessant power cuts in households and industries, excessive sand mining, increasing prices of essential items, 2G spectrum case and undue influence of Karunanidhi's extended family in various aspects of Tamil politics and business and even media.
