Ethiopian Broadcasting Service (EBS TV) is an Ethiopian free to air television network. [1] Launched in 2008, the network is based in Ethiopia with correspondents both in United States at its headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, U.S. EBS TV broadcasts programs in mostly Amharic. [2] [3] EBS TV is the first private channel launched in Ethiopia.

EBS TV focuses various entertainments related subjects such as talk shows, game shows, movies, dramas and others. EBS TV is known for the production of the first local late night talk show, Seifu on EBS , hosted by Seifu Fantahun. The channel is available via Nilesat 7°W position and it is also being distributed on DStv as of March 2017.

EBS Cinema is a channel that focuses on only Ethiopian films, dramas and sitcoms and it is available via Ethiosat.

EBS Musika

EBS Musika or music is a channel that broadcast only music content like pop, rap and classical music and its available via Ethiosat.

EBS HD

EBS HD is the main channel that broadcasts news, sports, entertainment, economy and culture content and it is available via Ethiosat.

History

EBS TV is the first privately run television network in Ethiopia. It also operates two other channels EBS Musika and EBS Cinema which can both, along with EBS TV, be found on Roku TV and NSS 12 Satellite 11105 V 45000. [4]

In 2018, EBS TV was able to acquire a local broadcasting license. The company had to split into two separate entities, EBS Television Ethiopia Plc and EBS Television Global, in order to get the local broadcasting permit. [5] As of April 2018 EBS is prepared a live transmission studios for the news and sports programs at its current headquarters located on Bawa Building, around Unity University in Gerji. [5]

The mass media in Ethiopia consist of radio, television and the Internet, which remain under the control of the Ethiopian government, as well as private newspapers and magazines. Ten radio broadcast stations, eight AM and two shortwave, are licensed to operate in Ethiopia. The major radio broadcasting stations include Radio Fana a private station, Radio Voice of One Free Ethiopia, and the Voice of the Revolution of Tigray. The only terrestrial (broadcast) television networks are government owned and include EBC and other regional stations. In keeping with government policy, radio broadcasts occur in a variety of languages including Amharic, Afaan Oromo, Tigrigna, and more. JTV Ethiopia is an Ethiopian free-to-air satellite television channel owned by Yosef Gebre, a journalist, singer and philanthropist who previously began his TV show in EBS TV before establishing his own channel. It is based in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S and launched in 2016 on Nilesat. In May 2020, the channel in its standard-definition (SD) television platform was officially closed as a result of poor revenue from each employee and the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the station for less advertising income. However, the channel still exists in HD and is transmitted via Ethiosat.

Launched in September 2017, the network is based in Ethiopia and broadcasts programming in Amharic. It has its studios located at the headquarters of Fana Broadcasting Corporate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In recent years, the channel stretched its network with number of news correspondents across the nation.

Dimtsi Weyane is an Ethiopian news-based television and radio network headquartered in Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia. Owned by Dimtsi Weyane Tigray P.L.C., it first launched as a radio station in 1980 and in 2018 launched a satellite television channel. The channel broadcasts programming mainly in Tigrinya with some programming in Amharic, Oromo and English.
