The East Hampton Center for Contemporary Art (EHCCA) was a non-profit arts center and exhibition space located at 16R Newtown Lane in East Hampton, New York. [2]
EHCCA was founded in 1985 by artists Susan Tepper and Jennifer Cross. Tepper provided the majority of the funding and Cross served as Director and Curator from 1985 to 1991. The center's mission was to provide exhibition opportunities for deserving artists as well as sponsor lectures, readings, and site-specific outdoor sculpture projects to serve artists' needs and promote and encourage public appreciation of contemporary art. The center's program was modeled after alternative venues such as Artists Space in New York City, and featured both established and emerging artists. During its six years of operation, EHCCA presented the work of more than 350 artists in 40 solo and group exhibitions. [4] EHCCA was regularly cited by critics for its dedication to emerging artists, [5] and its cutting-edge exhibition program. [6] [7] [8] Exhibitions at EHCCA were often thematic and included artists from the region as well as national and international artists. [9]
The EHCCA's inaugural exhibition was New Talent / New York an exhibition of four East Village Artists: Ford Crull, Leslie Lowinger, Gary Petri and Monika Misslbeck . [10] Over the next six years EHCCA invigorated the East End art scene by bringing in artists from New York City and elsewhere. It invited guest curators to organize shows and it showcased the work of a number of young artists at the beginning of the careers, including Robert Harms, Lesley Dill and Ronald Gonzalez.
EHCCA was a champion of women artists. Noteworthy artists who exhibited work at the EHCCA include: Petah Coyne, Joan Semmel, Mercedes Matter, Beverly Fishman, Beverly Buchanan, Miriam Schapiro, Elaine de Kooning, and Audrey Flack. [11] [12] [13]
EHCCA's exhibitions included Americanos, a show that focused on Latino artists organized by a guest curator Susana Torruella Leval; Artists Choose Artists, an exhibition that invited established artists to choose younger artists to show alongside them; EHCCA for AIDS Care, a benefit exhibition; Crosscurrents, an exchange exhibition with the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center; Particular Voices, a show by Robert Giard of photographic portraits of Gay and Lesbian writers; and East Hampton Avant-Garde, a collaborative exhibition with Guild Hall of East Hampton that was a tribute to the Signa Gallery, the artist-run gallery that showed Abstract Expressionism in East Hampton in the 1950s. EHCCA expanded its mission to include acknowledging artists with distinguished careers by honoring them with solo shows each summer. Peter Busa's New Jazzy Works in 1985 was the first of these shows. In the following years, veteran artists awarded solo shows included William King, Connie Fox and Arnold Mesches. EHCCA also featured works by Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Alfonso Ossorio. [15]
Adjacent to the storefront space occupied by EHCCA's gallery was an outdoor garden where sculptors were commissioned to create site-specific installations each summer. In 1987 Herb Parker created sod houses arranged around a spiral and lit with neon lights for the space. Patrick Doughtery, Hank de Ricco, Grace Knowlton, and Ron Fondaw were among the others who transformed the garden each summer.
In addition to mounting exhibitions, EHCCA staged special events including premiering performances by Joseph Pintauro; lectures by Joan Jonas, Robert Storr and Eleanor Heartney; and readings by Stanley Moss, Eileen Myles, Kenneth Koch and David Leavitt, among others. [16] EHCCA's programs and exhibitions attracted large crowds of young city people, local families with children, and artists of different generations including old WPA artists and former Max's Kansas City regulars, mixed in with Mudd Club aficionados and young artists who were in residence at the Edward F. Albee Foundation in Montauk.
Board Advisors to EHCCA included the associate curator at MoMA's Department of Drawings Magdalena Dabrowski, B.H. Friedman, former educational director at Guild Hall Museum, Hope Harris, Bill Jensen, artist, educator and Gallery Director Roy Nicholson, Li-Lan, Susana Torruella Leval, poet, critic, and English instructor at Southampton College Robert Long, Freda Mindlin, Frank Wimberley, and Alfonso Ossorio, who founded and ran the Signa Gallery from 1957 to 1960. After the death of Tepper, the EHCCA could not continue its funding, and was forced to close. The EHCCA closed in March, 1991. [18] In 1994 Jennifer Cross went on to become Dean of Art at the Ross School in East Hampton.
Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor of the Ecole de Paris. His idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced so-called "low art" and eschewed traditional standards of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. He is perhaps best known for founding the art movement art brut, and for the collection of works—Collection de l'art brut—that this movement spawned. Dubuffet enjoyed a prolific art career, both in France and in America, and was featured in many exhibitions throughout his lifetime.
The New York School was an informal group of American poets, painters, dancers, and musicians active in the 1950s and 1960s in New York City. They often drew inspiration from surrealism and the contemporary avant-garde art movements, in particular action painting, abstract expressionism, jazz, improvisational theater, experimental music, and the interaction of friends in the New York City art world's vanguard circle.
Lowery Stokes Sims is an American art historian and curator of modern and contemporary art known for her expertise in the work of African, African American, Latinx, Native and Asian American artists such as Wifredo Lam, Fritz Scholder, Romare Bearden, Joyce J. Scott and others. She served on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Museum of Arts and Design. She has frequently served as a guest curator, lectured internationally and published extensively, and has received many public appointments. Sims was featured in the 2010 documentary film !Women Art Revolution.

The Renaissance Society, founded in 1915, is a leading independent contemporary art museum located on the campus of the University of Chicago, with a focus on the commissioning and production of new works by international artists. The kunsthalle-style institution typically presents four exhibitions each year, along with concerts, performances, screenings, readings, and lectures—all of which are free and open to the public. "The Ren" also produces publications in conjunction with many of its exhibitions.
Kathleen Kucka is an American visual artist whose practice includes abstract paintings, works on paper and prints. She is known for work that combines a conceptual approach with unique, sometimes unpredictable processes of mark-making such as the burning of canvas, pouring paint, and sewing. Critics note her work for its highly associative, open-ended quality, which evokes modernist formalism and natural phenomena from the microcosmic to the macrocosmic. Critic Stephanie Buhmann wrote that Kucka's work is inspired by nature and contemporary abstraction with attention to geometry, and leaves viewers "wondering if we are witnessing a scene documented through a microscope or captured from an aerial view ... we find ourselves reminded of the interrelations between all things, be they of a natural or man-made origin."
Petah Coyne is a contemporary American sculptor and photographer best known for her large and small scale hanging sculptures and floor installations. Working in innovative and disparate materials, her media has ranged from the organic to the ephemeral, from incorporating dead fish, mud, sticks, hay, hair, black sand, specially-formulated and patented wax, satin ribbons, silk flowers, to more recently, velvet, taxidermy, and cast wax statuary. Coyne's sculptures and photographs have been the subject of more than 30 solo museum exhibitions.

James Allan Curtis, known professionally as Diego Cortez, was an American filmmaker and art curator closely associated with the no wave period in New York City. Cortez was the co-founder of the Mudd Club, and he curated the influential post-punk art show New York/New Wave, which brought the then aspiring artist Jean-Michel Basquiat to fame.

Guild Hall of East Hampton in the incorporated Village of East Hampton on Long Island's East End, is one of the United States' first multidisciplinary cultural institutions. Opened in 1931, it was designed by architect Aymar Embury II and includes a visual art museum with three galleries and the John Drew Theater, a 360 seat proscenium stage. It is historically significant for its role in exhibiting the works of the American Abstract expressionists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, John Ferren, and Robert Motherwell; performances by Helen Hayes, Thornton Wilder, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson, and hundreds of other world-class stars of stage and screen; and involvement by the literary figures George Plimpton, Peter Matthiessen, Gore Vidal, Edward Albee, and John Steinbeck. It holds a permanent collection of 2,400 works of art and continues to build on important relationships in the worlds of film, theatre, dance, music, and visual art. The museum's current director is Andrea Grover, who was previously Curator of Special Projects of the Parrish Art Museum.
Helen Elizabeth Phillips, also known as Helen Phillips Hayter was an American sculptor, printmaker, and graphic artist active in San Francisco, New York, and Paris. During her life, she contributed to various avant-gardes of the 20th century, with a personal, de-conditioned vision, which evolved from the surrealist practices the 30s to the adoption of a repeated geometric unit to express the three-dimensional movement in sculpture. Her biomorphic, hermetic imaginary, her use of positive and negative spaces in both sculpture and printmaking, and her strong, pure color, opened new paths in artistic expression.
Charlotte Park, also known as Charlotte Park Brooks (1918–2010) was an American abstract painter. She began work as a professional artist soon after the close of World War II, working in studios first in Manhattan and then in eastern Long Island. She was associated with and drew both support and inspiration from her husband James Brooks and other first-generation abstract expressionist artists, including particularly her neighbors, Jackson Pollock, and Lee Krasner. During most of her career she neither sought nor received praise from critics and collectors, but late in life was celebrated for the quality of her artistic achievements and had her work shown in prestigious solo and group exhibitions. At the end of her life a critic said, "Hers was a major gift all but stifled by a happily embraced domesticity and by the critical bullying of a brutally doctrinaire art world."
New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) is a group of women that aims to provide support and opportunities to New York-based female professional artists. The society was founded in 1925 by 26 women. NYSWA organizes exhibitions and events featuring female artists living and working in New York only.
