Eastern Montgomery High School, built during 1999 and 2000, is located in Elliston, Virginia and is one of four high schools in Montgomery County, Virginia. The school's mascot is the Mustang, and the school colors are maroon, black and white. [2]

Extracurricular activities

Eastern Montgomery has teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, cheerleading, football, golf, softball, tennis, track, soccer, and volleyball. Eastern Montgomery also competes in many academic events, including MACC, [3] Scholastic Bowl, [4] and Forensics. [5] Eastern Montgomery has many awards in academic activities including a 2004 state championship in Scholastic Bowl. [6] In 2018 Eastern Montgomery was runner-up in the Region 1C Scholastic Bowl Tournament. [7] The Scholastic Bowl team also won the Pioneer District Tournament in 2018. Kirk Litton is the athletics director at Eastern Montgomery. [8]

Academics

Eastern Montgomery has received awards for its academics, being accredited annually for both the Standards of Learning and No Child Left Behind requirements. [2] The school has many elective choices beyond the core classes, being particularly strong in the career and technical education and fine arts [9] [10] [11] departments. Spanish is offered along with art, chorus, and band.

History

The school is considered a moving of Shawsville High School, which was originally a joined school with Shawsville Middle School. In the late nineties, a growth in the area's population caused demand for a new and larger school to house all the students. Eastern Montgomery was built soon after, with all the remaining Shawsville High students being moved to it at the start of the next year. Shawsville Middle remained in the old building, with the second building being shut down and used for storage. The schools greatest athletic success came during the 2010 season. The 2010 football team was able to reach the Division 1 State Championship Game, but were defeated by Riverhead Highschool in Staunton Virginia by a score of 49-63.

The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) is a United States based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes high school quiz bowl and runs the National Scholastic Championship (NSC), an end-of-year national tournament for high school quiz bowl teams. PACE was founded in 1996 by a group of quiz bowl players and coaches who were dissatisfied with the quality of high school quiz bowl at the time. The NSC has been run in the June of every year since 1998. Beyond running the NSC, PACE offers advice and staff assistance to high schools and colleges who run high school quiz bowl tournaments. PACE does not currently supply questions for regular season tournaments or offer a collegiate competition program, unlike NAQT or Questions Unlimited.

Virginia High School is a high school located in Bristol, Virginia. In 1999, Virginia High started offering the Tri-Cities area's first International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Classes from the Advanced Placement program are also offered to help students who are headed to college. A career and technical wing was added to the main school building to help students who wish to go into a trade straight from high school. Courses offered for this path include: culinary arts, cybersecurity, engineering and manufacturing, coding, business, horticulture, auto-mechanics, building trades, and nursing.

Central High School is a public high school in Norton, Virginia. The school traces its origins back to J. J. Kelly High School and Pound High School, which were both founded in 1953. It is part of the Wise County Public Schools system. It is a consolidated school, created by merging the two aforementioned schools in 2011. The mascot for Central is the Warrior. The school's colors are red, silver, black, and white. The Warriors compete in the Virginia High School League's 2A classification with other schools from around Southwest Virginia. Students are offered courses in the Advanced Placement Program (AP), as well as the opportunity to receive college credit from the Virginia Community College System for courses taken on the Central campus.
