Ed Penniman is an American painter and graphic designer best known for his oil and watercolor paintings of the California's Central Coast. The American Institute of Graphic Arts selected his book design as one of the 50 best designed book covers of the year, and he has won numerous awards for his paintings and designs. [1] He was commissioned by Santa Cruz County to design the official county flag in 1983. [2] [3]

His designs and art work have been featured in magazines in the US, Europe, and Japan. [4] Penniman authored You Are Up to You, a book documenting his near-death experience and recovery from Guillain–Barré syndrome, which left him a quadriplegic for three years. [5] [6] [7]

Early life and career

Edward George Penniman was born (May 12, 1942) in Santa Cruz, California to parents Warren and Irene (née Costella) Penniman, Sr. [8] His father, Warren Penniman, was the owner of Penniman Title in Santa Cruz. He is of Italian and English descent. Penniman's grandmother, Leonora (née Naylor) Penniman (also a well-known artist), began teaching him watercolors when he was seven years old. [9] [10] [11] [12] His grandfather, TF Costella, was contracted to do the cement work for the Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz in 1924. [13]

Penniman graduated from Chouinard Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. [14] In 1965, he was an art director at Ogilvy Advertising Agency (formerly Carson-Roberts) art directing print and TV advertising for companies including Baskin-Robbins, Singer, and Mattel. [15]

Career

Penniman rose to prominence as an artist in the early 1970s winning awards for his unique graphic design and artwork. He founded Ed Penniman and Associates, Advertising Design in Santa Cruz where he designed award-winning art and graphics for wineries, the Santa Cruz Symphony, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.

Penniman's work has been featured in Communication Arts magazine, [16] [17] Graphic Elements of the World, Volume 1, [18] and The Book of American Trademarks. [19]

His book design for Planet Steward Journal of a Wildlife Sanctuary Book Cover was included in the 50 Best Book Designs of the Year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. [1] He was awarded a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair for his design of Bargetto Winery's wine label. Penniman was commissioned by Santa Cruz County to design their official flag, which was adopted by the Board of Supervisors on July 4, 1983. [2]

In 1984, at age 42, Penniman was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a nerve disorder that paralyzed him and left him a quadriplegic for three years. [20] During his rehabilitation, he was given an easel and paints. He could only move his head, so he learned to use his mouth to hold his paint brushes. He slowly regained the use of his arms and legs, and followed the artist trail of Winslow Homer throughout the island of Eleuthera, as well as following Paul Gauguin's artist path to Tahiti, Moorea, and Rarotonga. [21] Penniman's paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications. [22] [23] [24] [25] [26]

Penniman is the former President of the Santa Cruz Art League and the curator of the California Statewide Landscape Exhibition, one of the longest-running art exhibitions in California. The annual Landscape Exhibition at the Art League was originated by his grandmother, Leonora Penniman, in 1926. [27] [28] [29]

The term usually refers to the arts that rely more on line, color or tone, especially drawing and the various forms of engraving; it is sometimes understood to refer specifically to printmaking processes, such as line engraving, aquatint, drypoint, etching, mezzotint, monotype, lithography, and screen printing. Graphic art mostly includes calligraphy, photography, painting, typography, computer graphics, and bindery. It also encompasses drawn plans and layouts for interior and architectural designs.

Rudy VanderLans is a Dutch graphic designer, photographer, and the co-founder of Emigre Fonts with his wife Zuzana Licko. Emigre Fonts is an independent type foundry in Berkeley, CA. He was also the art director and editor of Emigre magazine, the legendary journal devoted to visual communications from 1984 to 2005. Since arriving in California in 1981, he has been photographing his adoptive Golden State as an ongoing side project. He has authored a total of 11 photo books on the topic, and staged two solo exhibits at Gallery 16 in San Francisco.

Deborah Sussman was an American designer and a pioneer in the field of environmental graphic design. Her work incorporated graphic design into architectural and public spaces.

Orpha Mae Klinker (1891–1964) was an American artist well known for her California plein air landscape paintings and etchings as well as her portraiture and early California historic sites. She was also an active illustrator and graphic designer. Klinker was recognized for her series of historical and pioneer paintings. She painted a series of portraits of notable Californians and memorialized many historic early California structures on canvas. On October 14, 1963, she was awarded a resolution by the City Council of Los Angeles, recognizing her outstanding professional skill and appreciation for the many honors she has brought to the city. The commendatory scroll praised Klinker for her role as an oil painter and mentioned many of her portrait subjects such as General John C. Frémont, Andrés Pico, José Antonio Carrillo and Dr. Joseph P. Widney.

Kim Anno is a Japanese-American abstract painter. Born in Los Angeles, California to Japanese-Polish and Native American-Irish parents, respectively, she studied at San Francisco State University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1982. She was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985 from the San Francisco Art Institute. Anno began working at the California College of the Arts in 1996 as an associate professor, and was chair of the painting department as of 2012.

Jack Hooper was an American painter, muralist, sculptor, printmaker and art educator. Hooper was a major figure on the Southern California art scene, belonging to that generation of Los Angeles painters who matured during the late 1950s and the 1960s, painters such as John Altoon, Sam Amato, Robert Irwin, Lee Mullican, William Brice and Billy Al Bengston. He was an innovator in the use of new materials, most importantly plastic in art. He is known for abstract expressionist, mural and figurative painting. Hooper has exhibited in art museums and galleries nationally and internationally including solo shows in Europe, Mexico and the United States. Modeling renown UCLA art professor and figurative artist, Jan Stussy, the last 20 years of his life were spent in rural Mexico, where he drew and painted every single day until his death.

Mary DeNeale Morgan also known as M. DeNeale Morgan, was an American plein air painter, especially in watercolor, and printmaker. She was the director the Carmel Summer School of Art sponsored by the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club and a founding member of the Carmel Art Association (CAA) in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

Dolores Guerrero-Cruz is an American artist, she is known for her contemporary art through paintings, murals, and graphic art. Her art reflects her advocacy towards the feminist movement and empowerment movement for the Chicano and Latin community.

Eloise Pickard Smith was an artist and the first director of the California Arts Council in 1976, appointed by its creator, then Governor Jerry Brown. In 1977 she visited the California Medical Facility to judge an art show of work by incarcerated artists there. She was so inspired by what she saw, that she established the California Arts in Corrections Program later that year along with her husband, historian Page Smith. She opened the first art gallery in 1966 on the University of California Santa Cruz's campus, which is now called The Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Laura W. Maxwell</span> American painter

Laura W. Maxwell, also known as Laura Maxwell was an American artist and pioneer. She played a significant role in the artistic community of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where she settled. Maxwell was one of the pioneering artists who contributed to the establishment of the Carmel Art Association. Maxwell's artistic ability extended beyond the borders of Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula, as her floral paintings, marines, and landscapes in both oil and watercolor gained recognition in various art centers worldwide. Her works reached audiences as far as Paris, France, and made their way to exhibitions in Peking, China. This international exposure speaks to the universal appeal and recognition of Maxwell's talent.
