Eden Garden is a New Zealand garden in the Auckland suburb of Mount Eden. Set in 5.5 hectares (14 acres), it was established in 1964 and is open to the public for an admission fee. [1]
In 1962, the land was gifted to the local community by Frank and Ruby Mappin, who were known to be keen gardeners. [2] [3] At this time, Mappin also donated his neighbouring home to the Crown which is now Government House, Auckland. [4]
Construction of the gardens began in 1964 on the land that was a former quarry, led by horticulturalist Jack Clark. [5]
Eden Garden was then officially donated to the people of New Zealand in 1965 and has since been managed by The Eden Garden Society, Inc., a not-for-profit charitable organisation. [1] [6]
The garden's plants include a large collection of camellias, vireyas (tropical rhododendrons), Japanese maples, magnolias, hibiscus, bromeliads and various native trees. [7] [8]
