Edward Moreno Alonso is a Puerto Rican educator and former Secretary of Education of Puerto Rico.

Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and resident of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico earned a Bachelor of Arts in Language Arts from the University of Puerto Rico. Then, in 1992, he completed a Master's degree in Administration and Supervision of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Subsequently In 2002 he completed his studies obtaining a Doctorate in School Administration at Dowling College.

He began his career in public service in 1984 as a Adapted Physical Education Teacher at the Casiano Cepeda High School in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. He also worked from 1985 to 1991 as an Adapted Physical Education Teacher at the Agustín Cabrera Intermediate School in Carolina, Puerto Rico. During his career, he has received the Manuel A. Pérez Award, which is the highest recognition for public servants in the island. He has also served as Deputy Secretary of Education. [1]

In 2011, with the resignation of Secretary of Education Jesús Rivera Sánchez, Moreno assumed the role on an interim basis. In November 2011, he said he was available to fill the position on a permanent basis. [2] About a month later, Governor Luis Fortuño officially appointed him for the position. [3] He was confirmed by the Senate of Puerto Rico on December 20, 2011. [4]

Moreno ran for District Senator on the 2008 PNP primaries, but lost. [5]

The Puerto Rico Department of Education is one of five jurisdiction-wide public education systems in the United States, with Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa being the others. José A. "Josian" Santiago Rivera is a Puerto Rican politician. He became the mayor of the municipality of Comerío as a member of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) at the 2000 general elections, and was re-elected in 2004 and 2008. In 2010 Santiago became the president of the Asociación de Alcaldes de Puerto Rico, the organization that regulates cooperation between most mayors affiliated to the PPD.

Rafael Román Meléndez is a teacher and school principal, and was the Secretary of Education of Puerto Rico. Before being appointed as Secretary, Román served as President of the Organization of School Administrators and Principals of Puerto Rico. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education and Teaching from the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey in 1999, and a Master of Education from the Metropolitan University in 2005.

William Rosales Pérez was a Puerto Rican politician who served as mayor of Camuy from January 1989 to October 2002. Elected in 1988, when his New Progressive Party (NPP) lost most races, Rosales served as mayor of Camuy for 14 years before resigning in October 2002. At that time, he accepted NPP President Carlos Pesquera's offer to serve as Secretary General of the party. He was succeeded by vice-mayor Edwin García, who has served since after being reelected in his own right in 2004, 2008 and 2012.

Andrés Waldemar Volmar Méndez was a Puerto Rican politician and public servant for the New Progressive Party (PNP). He served as the Secretary of Sports and Recreation of Puerto Rico from 2017 to 2018, under Governor Ricardo Rosselló. Volmar ran for mayor of his hometown of Dorado, Puerto Rico on the 2020 Puerto Rican general election, but was defeated by the incumbent Carlos López Rivera. He is currently the host of La Bóveda de TeleOnce.

His New Progressive Party (PNP) not having a majority in either chamber of the 19th Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico meant that he would have to further negotiate the approval of his nominees with the opposition parties that hold control of the legislature.

It featured a pro-Independence secretary, a non-partisan Secretary of Governance, as well as the continuation of the previous PNP administrations' Commissioner of Safety and Public Protection.
