Eewai (English: The Ripple) is a 2022 non-feature Manipuri film directed by Khwairakpam Bishwamittra. [1] It is produced by Samir Thingbaijam under the banner of Nongdol Mamikol. [2] [3] The film stars Leishangthem Tonthoi in the lead role. It was premiered at Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS), Imphal on 26 June 2022. The film got official selections at the 4th Nepal Cultural International Film Festival 2022, Druk International Film Festival 2022 (Bhutan), Festivus Film Fest Canada 2022, Dadashaheb Phalke International Film Festival India 2023 and Gangtok International Film Festival 2022. Eewai was screened at the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival 2022 in Short and Documentary Panorama section. The film was certified by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in 2022.

Synopsis

The film tells the agony of a mom whose little child dies premature. Within the Meitei community of Manipur, a baby who dies earlier than he attains the age of three years is taken into account a nasty omen to the household and all customary post-mortal ceremonies are deprived. However, for a mom, her child shall all the time be her little one without contemplating the age.

The story of the film was written by Arambam Samarendra and screenplay by Arambam Ongbi Memchoubi. Leipaklei was screened on the inaugural day of 5th Guwahati Film Festival 2012. It was also screened at the 18th Kolkata International Film Festival and Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) held at Jeonju, South Korea. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Manipuri at the 60th National Film Awards.

Khwairakpam Bishwamittra is an Indian film director, actor and script writer who works in theatre and Manipuri films. He first appeared on silver screen in the 1996 hit film Kanaga Hinghouni, where he co-directed with Chan Heisnam. Some of the famous films he directed include Kaorage, Torei and Sur Da Ngaojabee. He is also a renowned playwright of Manipuri Shumang Leelas and stage plays produced by AIR Imphal and Doordarshan DDK Imphal. As of 2022, his non-feature Eewai got official selection at the 4th Nepal Cultural International Film Festival 2022. Eewai was screened at the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival in Short and Documentary Panorama section on 19 and 21 December 2022 at Nandan-III and Sichir Mancha, Kolkata.
