Eide Church (Norwegian : Eide kirke) is a parish church in Grimstad municipality in Aust-Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of Eide. The church is part of the Eide parish in the Vest-Nedenes deanery in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden, cruciform church was built in 1795 and it seats about 250 people. This is the third church to stand on this site. [1] [2]

History

The first church in Eide was probably a stave church that was built before the year 1349. At some point during the 17th century it was torn down and replaced with a second church. Not much is known about that church. It was torn down in 1795 and it was replaced with the present church. The present timber-framed church was put into use in 1795, but was not officially considered completed until 1806. [3]

Fjære is a former municipality in Aust-Agder county, Norway. The 60.4-square-kilometre (23.3 sq mi) municipality existed from 1846 until 1971. It was located to the north of the town of Grimstad. The name is still used to refer to that area, which is now a part of Grimstad municipality. The administrative centre of Fjære was the village of Vik, just east of the historic Fjære Church. Other villages in Fjære included Fevik, Dømmesmoen, Frivold, Kroken, and Rønnes.

Eide is a former municipality in Aust-Agder county, Norway. It is currently located within the municipality of Grimstad in the traditional district of Sørlandet. The municipality of Eide existed from 1838 until 1962. The 32.4-square-kilometre (12.5 sq mi) municipality was made up of 29.2 square kilometres (11.3 sq mi) on the mainland and the rest being nearly 70 small islands off the Skaggerak coast. The larger islands include Auseøya, Homborøya, and Ålesøya. The administrative centre was the village of Eide where the Eide Church is located. Other villages in Eide included Jortveit and Homborsund.

It is located in the village of Tveit on the south shore of the river Otra, just off the Norwegian National Road 9. The white, wooden church was built in a rectangular style in 1880 by the architect Oskar Fabricius from Oslo. The church seats about 250 people. It was consecrated on 7 July 1880 by the Bishop Jørgen Moe. This church was built to replace a much older Austad Church that was located in Austad, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the southeast, on the other side of the river. The old church was torn down around the same time as the present church was built.

The church is part of the Hornnes parish in the Otredal deanery in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in an octagonal style in 1828 using plans by the architect Lars Larsen Forsæth. The church seats about 300 people. It was consecrated on 22 June 1828 by the local dean from Evje Church. It was built by Leg Askildsen Hallingskaar, a builder from Laudal. He carved his name into the baptismal font which he gifted to the church.

In 1881, the town had grown and the church was too small, so it was disassembled and moved to nearby Nedenes and rebuilt in 1882 as the new "Nedenesengene Church", but it was later shortened to simply "Engene Church". The church seats about 480 people.

The white, wooden church was built in 1884 using designs by the architect Johan Christoff Friedrich Reuter. The church seats about 650 people. It was built to replace the centuries-old Øyestad Church which is why this church is sometimes called the "new" Øyestad Church. The church cost about 40,000 kr to construct at that time.

The white, wooden church was built in a "long church" style in 1848 by Lars Listøl using plans by the architect Christian H. Grosch. The church seats about 500 people. In 2004, the church was renovated and restored to its original look.
