History

EVG was founded on November 30, 2010 in Fulda as an unification of the existing unions Transnet (210,000 members) and GDBA (30,000 members), which had collaborated since 2005.

After a year-long dispute, EVG and German rail operator Deutsche Bahn agreed in 2015 to a wage hike for all 160,000 employees of 3.5 percent, or at least 80 euros more per month; the union had originally called for a wage hike of 6 percent for its workers. [2] In late 2018, EVG again staged a four-hour stoppage that brought long-distance rail traffic to a standstill and disrupted commuter and freight trains; as a result, Deutsche Bahn agreed to a 29-month wage deal, including another 3.5 percent raise. [3] In March 2023, EVG and the United Services Trade Union (ver.di) called 24-hour "warning" strikes, one of the largest walkouts in decades in Germany. [4]

The EVG is a member of the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB). Like both Transnet and GDBA, EVG is affiliated with the European Transport Workers' Federation and the International Transport Workers' Federation.

The 2022–2024 United Kingdom railway strikes are an industrial dispute in the United Kingdom (UK). The UK has seen its largest incidence of industrial action since 1989, beginning in the second Johnson ministry and continuing through the Truss ministry and Sunak ministry. The railway strikes commenced on 21 June 2022 after members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) walked out over wages, planned changes to working practices – involving the removal of guards from trains, the reduction in the number of open ticket offices, and an increase in the age at which people could claim the young persons and senior citizen card – and the threat of redundancies. The disputes in Scotland and Wales were resolved by the RMT in December 2022, and by ASLEF in May 2023. In much of England the RMT dispute was resolved in November 2023. As of January 2024, the RMT dispute remains active in London, while the ASLEF dispute is active across all of England.

The 2022 United States railroad labor dispute was a labor dispute between freight railroads and workers in the United States. Rail companies and unions had tentatively agreed to a deal in September 2022, but it was rejected by a majority of the unions' rank-and-file members. Congress and President Joe Biden intervened to pass the tentative agreement into law on December 2, averting a strike.
