Eisenhuth Horseless Vehicle Company was a manufacturer of Brass Age automobiles who were originally based in New York City. In 1902 the company purchased the Keating Wheel and Automobile Company and established manufacturing operations in Middletown, Connecticut. [1] During 1903, the company merged with the Graham Fox Motor Car Company, absorbing that firm and expanding operations in Middletown. [2]

In 1904, the company was sued by Colonel Frank A. Fox of the Graham Fox Motor Car Company, who claimed that he had "invented certain essential features of the motors now being made by the Eisenhuth company," [3] and went bankrupt in 1907. [4] In 1909, the Eisenhuth factory was sold to the "Noiseless Typewriter Company." [5]

Their automobile was an unusual model called the Compound with a three-cylinder compound internal combustion engine. Two were working cylinders, the larger middle one further expanded the exhaust gases of the outer working cylinders, this concept received later the name: '5-Stroke engine'. [6]

History

The 1904 Compound was a touring car model. Equipped with a tonneau, it could seat 7 passengers and sold for $6000 to 8000. The vertical-mounted straight-3, situated at the front of the car, produced 35  hp (26.1  kW). A 3-speed sliding gear transmission was fitted. The car weighed 3100 lb (1406 kg).

Elmore Manufacturing Company was a manufacturer of veteran and brass era automobiles and bicycles (1893–97), headquartered at 504 Amanda Street, Clyde, Ohio, from 1893 until 1912. The company took its name from a small parcel of land in Clyde with the name Elmore associated with it where a stave mill was established originally, then evolved into bicycle production. The village of Elmore, Ohio is located 20 mi (32.2 km) to the east. Northern Manufacturing Company was a manufacturer of Brass Era automobiles in Detroit, Michigan, automobiles designed by Charles Brady King. Early advertising included catchy phrases such as "Utility is the Basis for Beauty" and "Built for Business" and the famous "Silent Northern".

A compound internal combustion engine unit is a type of internal combustion engine (ICE) where gasses of combustion are expanded in two or more stages. A typical arrangement for a compound ICE is that the fuel/air is first combusted and expanded in one of two alternating 4-stroke combustion high-pressure (HP) cylinders, then having given up heat and losing pressure, it exhausts directly into a larger-volume low-pressure (LP) cylinder.
