El Dhere (Somali : Ceeldheere) is a town located in the Galguduud region of Galmudug state in central Somalia. It is to the south of Galmudug's state capital, Dusmareb. [1]

Location

El Dhere is located 30 km to the south of Dusmareb, the administrative and state capital of the Galguduud region and Galmudug state, and 40 km to the north of Guriceel, the commercial capital of the Galgaduud region.

During the 1982 Ethiopian invasion of Somalia, the Somali National Army command in El Dhere organized a counterattack to repulse an Ethiopian armor offensive that had pushed 11km into Somalia. [2]

Demographics

As of 2019 the town has around 50,000 residents. As with most of Galmudug, it is primarily inhabited by Somalis from the Hiraab sub-clan of the Hawiye, particularly the Ayr [Ayaanle Cayr -EBEKAR] sub-clan of Habar Gidir.

Education

There are two primary and secondary schools that provide education in the town along with many Quranic schools. There is one privately owned university that provides undergraduate degrees.

Transportation

Air transportation in El Dhere is served by the nearby Guriel Airport.

Hospitals

Several health centers exist in the town, with most of them being privately owned. There is only one public hospital.

The Ayr clan were also the first mayors of Mogadishu. The Ayr clan controls the Nisa forces and many more government armies. The Ayr clan are known for their control of the city Mogadishu.

The 2006 Islamic Courts Union offensive is the period in the Somali Civil War that began in May 2006 with the Islamic Courts Union's (ICU) conquest of Mogadishu from the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism (ARPCT) and continued with further ICU expansion in the country. The Battle of Bandiradley in Somalia began on December 23, 2006, when Galmudug and Ethiopian forces, along with faction leader Abdi Qeybdid, fought Islamic Courts Union (ICU) militants defending Bandiradley. The fighting pushed the Islamists out of Bandiradley and over the border south into Adado district, Galgadud region, by December 25.
