Elaine Thomson (born 1957 in Inverness) is a former Scottish Labour Party politician. She was the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Aberdeen North constituency from 1999 to 2003. [1]
In the 2003 election she was defeated by Brian Adam of the Scottish National Party (SNP). [1] After her defeat she returned to work with her previous employer,an Aberdeen-based IT consultancy.
Thomson stood again in Aberdeen North at the 2007 Scottish Parliamentary election but again lost to Brian Adam by an increased majority. [2]
Winifred Margaret Ewing is a Scottish politician,lawyer and figure within the independence movement who served as President of the Scottish National Party from 1987 to 2005. Ewing was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Highlands and Islands from 1999 to 2003 and a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the equivalent seat from 1979 to 1999. The 2015 Scottish Labour Party leadership election was formally triggered on 16 May 2015 by the resignation of Jim Murphy as Leader of the Scottish Labour Party,which took effect on 13 June 2015,following the party's defeat at the 2015 general election. Ruth Davidson,who won the previous leadership election in 2011,resigned on 29 August 2019. Two candidates contested the election:Jackson Carlaw MSP,who served as the Scottish Conservatives' interim leader,and Michelle Ballantyne MSP. Carlaw was seen as the favourite in the contest,and won the endorsement of most of the party's MSPs and MPs. Carlaw won the election on 14 February 2020,winning more than three-quarters of the votes of party members.
