History and technology

The company was founded in 1947 by Umberto Fregnan and is still owned by the Fregnan family. [1] From the beginning, Elektra's focus was on easy operation and maintenance. [2] The company has been issued a large number of patents. [3] In 1950 the first machine was presented with an automatic hydraulic unit. [4] [5] In addition to the water level control with float, which was developed by the company as a seal-less system, the company also developed automatic dispensing with an electrically controlled valve (1968) and the electronic delivery of five doses (1978).

Only copper is used for the boiler and 80 percent of parts are produced by Elektra itself. All machines are tested for 48 hours before delivery.

Elektra produces two types of machines that are aimed at professional users (divisione bar) and consumers (divisione casa). The professional line features seven different series with semi-automatic equipment. In the consumer line, the Nivola and Family Retro units can be ordered with semi-automatic equipment. There is also a model with a single-lever machine. The entire product range contains over 40 models. For each of the respective areas, mills and accessories are available.

Some models have the company's symbol, an eagle, sand cast and mounted on a chrome plate on top of the cover. Studs made from Murano glass are also available. Finally, some models have decorative panels with a coat of arms or the company logo attached.

Perception in the media

Elektra machines have been featured in some luxury goods and lifestyle publications, particularly retro style machines from the ‘Belle Epoque’ and ‘Family Retrò’ series. [6] [7]

Elektra machines have been used for decades in cafes and bars. Caffè Florian in Venice and Harrods department store in London prepare espresso using Elektra machines. [8]

On 14 September 2010 an Elektra boiler burst which injured six people in a Sainsbury's supermarket in Farnborough, Hampshire. [9] After the accident all the espresso machines at Sainsbury's were shut down. According to a study by the supermarket chain, the damage was caused by the manufacturer changing a safety valve in 2009, so Sainbury's reactivated their old Elektra machines. [10] On 24 February 2012 Elektra stated that the accident was caused by the supermarket's faulty electrical connection and not a fault of the machine. This was confirmed by an independent testing laboratory. [11]

Service

Elektra provides no direct support to customers who purchase their machines in the United States, where there are only a handful of distributors. The only way to obtain support is through a distributor.

Safety valve Device for releasing excess pressure in a system

A safety valve is a valve that acts as a fail-safe. An example of safety valve is a pressure relief valve (PRV), which automatically releases a substance from a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system, when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits. Pilot-operated relief valves are a specialized type of pressure safety valve. A leak tight, lower cost, single emergency use option would be a rupture disk.

Espresso machine Device used to brew espresso coffee

An espresso machine brews coffee by forcing pressurized water near boiling point through a "puck" of ground coffee and a filter in order to produce a thick, concentrated coffee called espresso. The first machine for making espresso was built in the early 1900s by Luigi Bezzera. The founder of the La Pavoni company bought the patent and from 1905 produced espresso machines commercially on a small scale in Milan. Multiple machine designs have been created to produce espresso. Several machines share some common elements, such as a grouphead and a portafilter. An espresso machine may also have a steam wand which is used to steam and froth liquids for coffee drinks such as cappuccino and caffe latte.

Diving regulator Mechanism that controls the pressure of a breathing gas supply for diving

A diving regulator is a pressure regulator that controls the pressure of breathing gas for diving. The most commonly recognised application is to reduce pressurized breathing gas to ambient pressure and deliver it to the diver, but there are also other types of gas pressure regulator used for diving applications. The gas may be air or one of a variety of specially blended breathing gases. The gas may be supplied from a scuba cylinder carried by the diver or via a hose from a compressor or high-pressure storage cylinders at the surface in surface-supplied diving. A gas pressure regulator has one or more valves in series which reduce pressure from the source, and use the downstream pressure as feedback to control the delivered pressure, or the upstream pressure as feedback to prevent excessive flow rates, lowering the pressure at each stage.

GPS when applied in the earthmoving industry can be a viable asset to contractors and increase the overall efficiency of the job. Since GPS satellite positioning information is free to the public, it allows for everyone to take advantage of its uses. Heavy equipment manufacturers in conjunction with GPS guidance system manufacturers have been co-developing GPS guidance systems for heavy equipment since the late 1990s. These systems allow the equipment operator to use GPS position data to make decisions based on actual grade and design features. Some heavy equipment guidance systems can even operate the machine's implements automatically from a set design that was created for the particular jobsite. GPS guidance systems can have tolerances as small as two to three centimeters making them extremely accurate compared to relying on the operator's skill level. Since the machine's GPS system has the ability to know when it is off the design grade, this can reduce surveying and material costs required for a specific job.

Nestlé Nespresso S.A., trading as Nespresso, is an operating unit of the Nestlé Group, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Nespresso machines brew espresso and coffee from coffee capsules, a type of pre-apportioned single-use container, or reusable capsules (pods), of ground coffee beans, sometimes with added flavorings. Once inserted into a machine, the capsules are pierced and processed, water is then forced against a heating element at high pressure meaning that only the quantity for a single cup is warmed. Nespresso is a premium price coffee, and by 2011 had annual sales in excess of 3 billion Swiss francs. The word Nespresso is a portmanteau of "Nestlé" and "Espresso", a common mechanic used across other Nestlé brands.
