Elena Clare Johnson (born 2 November 1985) is a badminton player from Guernsey who competed in the Island Games since 2001 and the Commonwealth Games five times. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Career

In 2010, Johnson attempted to find a doubles partner for the 2011 Island Games in Gayle Lloyd. As Lloyd was deemed just short of the permanent residence status required to compete for Guernsey in the games, Johnson did not compete in women's doubles at the 2011 games. [5]

For the 2021 Island Games in Guernsey, Johnson will be serving as player-manager for the Guernsey Badminton Association. [6]

She was part of the national mixed team that won the gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, also captured the silver medals in the mixed and women's doubles events. Guernsey participates in its own right in the Commonwealth Games.

The badminton events at the 2010 Commonwealth Games were taking place at Siri Fort Sports Complex and Saket Sports Complex in New Delhi from 4–14 October 2010. The games featured six badminton events – singles and doubles for men and women, mixed doubles and mixed teams.

Ashwini Ponnappa Indian badminton player

Ashwini Ponnappa Machimanda is an Indian badminton player who represents the country at the international badminton circuit in both the women's and mixed doubles disciplines. She had a successful partnership with Jwala Gutta as the pair has won many medals in international events including a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze medals at the Uber Cup and the Asian Badminton Championships. They were consistently ranked among the top 20 in the BWF World Ranking reaching as high as no. 10. Ponnappa and Gutta also won the bronze medal at the BWF World Championships in 2011, becoming the first Indian pair and women and only the second overall to win a medal at the World Championships.

She was the runner-up in 2016 English National Badminton Championships Women's singles. Birch was part of the English team that won the mixed team bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. She won the women's doubles silver medal at the 2019 European Games partnered with Lauren Smith.

Marcus Ellis British badminton player

Marcus Ellis is a British badminton player. He was the men's doubles champion in the 2016 English National Badminton Championships. Ellis and Chris Langridge won a bronze medal in the men's doubles at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, also gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. At the 2019 Minsk European Games, Ellis captured two gold medals; in the men's doubles with Langridge and in the mixed doubles event with Lauren Smith.

Badminton events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia took place between Thursday 5 April and Sunday 15 April at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

Kimberley Ashton, also known as Kim Ashton, is a cyclist and former badminton player from Jersey. She represented Jersey in badminton at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and cycling at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She has also competed at the Island Games.

Bryan Russell Purser is a New Zealand badminton player. He competed at two Commonwealth Games, in 1974 and 1978, and won the bronze medal in the men's doubles with his brother, Richard Purser, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.

Robin Lesley Denton is a New Zealand badminton player. She competed at three Commonwealth Games between 1970 and 1982, and won the bronze medal in the mixed doubles with Steve Wilson at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Badminton is one of the sports contested at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham, England. This will be the fifteenth staging of badminton at the Commonwealth Games since its inclusion in 1966, and the second staging within England specifically.
