Elisa Cecchetti (born 21 August 1995) is an Italian professional softball catcher for the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican Softball League. She plays international softball for Italy and competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Early career

Cecchetti was born on 21 August 1995 in Bollate, Lombardy, Italy. She started practicing softball with her sister and cousins in the local softball club Bollate Softball 1969. She played and won several Italian titles with Bollate's U13, U15 and U21 teams. She made her Serie A1 Softball debut in 2011, aged 17. [1] [2]

After finishing high school, she emigrated to the United States, where she played college softball for four years. In 2016 and 2017 she played for the Tallahassee Community College and later transferred to the University of South Carolina Upstate, playing in 2018 and 2019 for the USC Upstate Spartans. [3] [4]

Professional career

On 27 November 2024, she was signed by the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican Softball League ahead of the 2025 season. [5] [6]

International career

Cecchetti made her debut with the Italian national team during the 2013 ESF Women's Championship held in Prague, Czech Republic, where the Italian squad won the silver medal after the losing the final game against the Netherlands. [7] She was also part of the team that won the 2015 ESF Women's Championship held in Rosmalen, Netherlands. [8] In 2017 she participated in the 2017 ESF Women's Championship held in Bollate, where Italy won the silver medal. [9] She won the gold medal in the 2019 ESF Women's Championship held in Ostrava, Czech Republic and the 2021 ESF Women's Championship held in Italy.

She was part of the Italian team that competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021) in Tokyo, Japan. [2] [3]

She recently competed in the 2022 Women's Softball European Championship held in Sant Boi de Llobregat, Spain, where the Italian squad won the bronze medal. [10]

Personal life

Her sister Martina and cousins Greta and Lara are also softball players; Greta too represented Italy at the 2020 Summer Olympics. [11] [12]

The World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe, known as WBSC Europe, was established on February 10, 2018, during a Congress of the Confederation of European Baseball and the European Softball Federation in Val d’Europe, France. the establishment of WBSC Europe followed the historic merger of the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) and the European Softball Federation (ESF). As of September 2022, WBSC Europe counts 40 members for baseball and 39 for softball.

The European Softball Federation, was the governing body of softball within Europe from 1976 until 2018, when it merged with the Confederation of European Baseball into WBSC Europe.

The Coed Slowpitch European Championship is the main championship tournament between national coeducational slowpitch softball teams in Europe, governed by WBSC Europe. Prior to 2018 this tournament was governed by the European Softball Federation (ESF).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Softball at the 2020 Summer Olympics</span> Olympic softball tournament

Softball was featured at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in its first Olympic appearance since 2008. The tournament consisted of six teams. Baseball/softball was one of five optional sports added to the program of the 2020 Summer Olympics. The first six opening round games were played at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium in an effort to highlight Fukushima's recovery from the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, while the remaining games were played at Yokohama Stadium. Softball will not return in 2024.

Six teams qualified for the Olympic softball tournament, including Japan, which, as host nation, qualified automatically. The United States team won the 2018 Women's Softball World Championship to qualify for the Olympics. The remaining four spots were allocated through three qualification tournaments: one spot for a Europe/Africa tournament, one spot for an Asia/Oceania tournament, and two spots for an Americas tournament.

The Super 6 Baseball and Softball is a tournament between national baseball teams in Europe, governed by the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB), the European Softball Federation (ESF) and the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). It was held for the first and only time from September 18 to 23, 2018 in Hoofddorp, Netherlands. It was organized by the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB), the City of Hoofddorp and the local baseball club Hoofddorp Pioniers. It was featured by the top 6 nations of the 2016 European Championship and ESF Women's Championship.

The Baseball5 European Championship is the main championship tournament between national Baseball5 teams in Europe, governed by the WBSC Europe. The tournament serves as qualifier for the Baseball5 World Cup, with the top two teams qualifying for the world championship. France and Lithuania are the most successful teams, having won the championship once.
