Elizabeth Ann McClanahan (born September 1,1959) is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. She was sworn in on September 1,2011,for a term ending in 2023. In January 2019,she announced that she would retire from the Court effective September 1 of that year. [1]
Born in Buchanan County,Virginia,she received an undergraduate degree in government and sociology from the College of William and Mary (1981) and her J.D. degree from the University of Dayton (1984). [2] She formerly chaired the State Council of Higher Education and served as vice rector of the College of William and Mary. She formerly partnered with a law firm called Penn,Stuart,and Eskridge and served for more than eight years on the Virginia Court of Appeals as a Judge. [3] She is a breast cancer survivor. [4]
She became President and Dean of the Appalachian School of Law on September 2,2019. [5] She departed from this role, [6] and is currently CEO of the Virginia Tech Foundation as of June 1,2021. [7] She is also currently a part of the McCammon Group as a mediator of legal disputes. [8]
During her time on the Virginia Court of Appeals,she was honored in the 2011 list of "Influential Women of Virginia" by Virginia Lawyers Media. [9] In 2021,she was recognized by Virginia Business in "Virginia 500:The 2021 Power List" in the Nonprofits/Philanthropy section. [10]
Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton to replace retiring justice Byron White,and at the time was viewed as a moderate consensus-builder. Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court,after Sandra Day O'Connor. During her tenure,Ginsburg authored the majority opinions in cases such as United States v. Virginia (1996),Olmstead v. L.C. (1999),Friends of the Earth,Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services,Inc. (2000),and City of Sherrill v. Oneida Indian Nation of New York (2005). Later in her tenure,Ginsburg received attention for passionate dissents that reflected liberal views of the law. She was popularly dubbed "the Notorious R.B.G.",a moniker she later embraced.
The Michigan State University College of Law is the law school of Michigan State University,a public research university in East Lansing,Michigan. Established in 1891 as the Detroit College of Law,it was the first law school in the Detroit,Michigan area and the second in the state of Michigan. The Appalachian School of Law (ASL) is a private law school in Grundy,Virginia. It is accredited by the American Bar Association and offers a three-year Juris Doctor degree to approximately 128 full-time students. The school was founded in 1994 and admitted its first class of students in August 1997. ASL was started and brought to Buchanan County,Virginia as a tool of economic development for the region. ASL emphasizes professional responsibility and alternative dispute resolution in its curriculum and requires students to complete 25 hours of community service per semester in order to graduate. Each student is also required to complete an externship before graduation. According to ASL's 2021 ABA-required disclosures,31% of the Class of 2020 obtained full-time,long-term,JD-required employment nine months after graduation. ASL was also the site of a triple homicide that took place on January 16,2002.

Bridget Mary McCormack is an American lawyer,professor,and retired justice. She served on the Michigan Supreme Court from 2013 to 2022,first as an associate justice,and as chief justice from 2019 to 2022. Previously she was a professor at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor,where she taught criminal law and legal ethics and oversaw the law school's clinical programs as associate dean of clinical affairs. Her academic work focused on practical experience in legal education. McCormack launched and worked in a pediatric advocacy law clinic focusing on children with health problems,and a domestic violence clinic. She retired from the Supreme Court at the end of 2022 and became President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Arbitration Association in February 2023.
William Cleveland Mims is an American jurist and former senior justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia. He is a former member of the Virginia General Assembly and Attorney General of Virginia. He is the second person in Virginia history to serve in these three offices. He presently is a lecturer and director of the pre-law program at Christopher Newport University.
