Elizabeth Howlett (born November 1938 [1] ) is a Conservative Party politician and former member of the London Assembly for Merton and Wandsworth.
Howlett was elected to the London Assembly on 4 May 2000 and re-elected on 10 June 2004. She served until May 2008. [2] Her positions included:
Howlett,was Wandsworth councillor since 1986 [3] in the London Borough of Wandsworth,where she is a former Mayor 1998/9 and former Chairman of the Social Services and Education Committees. She is a member of the London Regional Arts Council.
Elizabeth Howlett,was born in Dundee Scotland trained as a soprano at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) in Glasgow on a scholarship. She later moved to Glyndebourne in East Sussex then joined Saddlers Wells in 1961. She was an international opera singer and performed at Covent Garden,the continent and with the Scottish Opera. She was a member of the Hamburg State Opera for several seasons. [4] in the 1980s she appeared on the Stuart Burrows Sings (1981-1986) [5] television series. [6] At the time of her election to the London Assembly she was a professor at the Royal College of Music. [3] Sopranos who studied with her include Sandy Leung, [7] Natalie Clifton-Griffith [8] and Julie Bale. [9] In 1997 baritone Grant Doyle won a scholarship to study with her. During a fifteen-year career with that company,beginning at age 19,she was particularly known for her interpretations of the title role in Iolanthe,Pitti-Sing in The Mikado,Phoebe Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard,and Mad Margaret in Ruddigore. She later performed on television,in films and in musicals in London's West End. Jones's best-known recordings include the role of Pitti-Sing on both the 1973 D'Oyly Carte Mikado and the company's 1966 film version of The Mikado.

From 1896 to 1899 she originated several mostly smaller roles in Savoy operas and then continued to play a variety of smaller and larger roles in repertory with the company. She was its principal mezzo-soprano from 1904 to 1909.
