Elizabeth Vandiver (born 1956) is an American classical scholar. She is the Clement Biddle Penrose Professor of Latin and Classics at Whitman College,having previously taught at the University of Maryland,College Park. [1] She received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Philological Association in 1998. [1] She also won awards for her teaching from Northwestern University and the University of Georgia. [1] In May 2013,she was awarded Whitman College's "G. Thomas Edwards Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship",the highest award that Whitman College gives to a faculty member. [2]
Vandiver did undergraduate work at Shimer College in Illinois where she enrolled as an early entrant at the age of 16,after completing tenth grade. She earned a B.A. degree in 1976,and then worked several years as a librarian. She received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1990. Her dissertation was on Herodotus and was published as Heroes in Herodotus:The Interaction of Myth and History [3] . In February 2010,Oxford University Press published her study Stand in the Trench,Achilles:Classical Receptions in British Poetry of the Great War. [4] She has taught at the University of Maryland,Northwestern University,the University of Georgia,the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome,Italy,Loyola University New Orleans,Louisiana,and Utah State University. Edith Hall,is a British scholar of classics,specialising in ancient Greek literature and cultural history,and professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University. She is a Fellow of the British Academy. From 2006 until 2011 she held a Chair at Royal Holloway,University of London,where she founded and directed the Centre for the Reception of Greece and Rome until November 2011. She resigned over a dispute regarding funding for classics after leading a public campaign,which was successful,to prevent cuts to or the closure of the Royal Holloway Classics department. Until 2022,she was a professor at the Department of Classics at King's College London. She also co-founded and is Consultant Director of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at Oxford University,Chair of the Gilbert Murray Trust,and Judge on the Stephen Spender Prize for poetry translation. Her prizewinning doctoral thesis was awarded at Oxford. In 2012 she was awarded a Humboldt Research Prize to study ancient Greek theatre in the Black Sea,and in 2014 she was elected to the Academy of Europe. She lives in Cambridgeshire.

Michael Courtney Jenkins Putnam is an American classicist specializing in Latin literature,but has also studied literature written in many other languages. Putnam has been particularly influential in his publications concerning Virgil‘s ‘’Aeneid‘’. He is the son of politician and businessman Roger Putnam. Putnam received his B.A.,M.A.,and Ph. D. from Harvard. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1959 he taught at Smith College for a year. He then moved on to teach at Brown University and served as W. Duncan MacMillan II Professor of Classics and a professor of comparative literature for 48 years before retiring in 2008. He was awarded the 1963 Rome Prize,and was later a Resident (1970) and Mellon Professor in Charge of the Classical School (1989-91). He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996 and the American Philosophical Society in 1998.

Frank Justus Miller (1858-1938) was a leading American classicist,translator,and university administrator in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He authored the Loeb Classical Library translations of Seneca and of Ovid's Metamorphoses,and was president of the American Classical League for more than a decade,from 1922 to 1934.
Elizabeth Gwyn Caskey was a Canadian-American classical scholar,professor,and archaeologist,known for her work in the excavations at Lerna and Kea,which are of importance to Greek prehistory. As an archaeologist she worked with her husband,Jack Caskey,on excavations where she supervised the trenches of every annual dig and their fortifications. She also wrote summaries of the excavations. After her marriage ended she excavated at Pylos. She was a Professor of Classics at Randolph-Macon College who became Professor Emeritus in 1981.
Agnata Frances Butler was a British classics scholar. She was among the first generation of women to take the Classical Tripos examinations at the University of Cambridge,and was the only person to be placed in the top division of the first class at the end of her third year,in 1887. She married the Master of Trinity College,Henry Montagu Butler,in August 1888,becoming the leading hostess in Cambridge. She published a version of Book VII of Herodotus' Histories in 1891.
Elizabeth Hazelton "Hazel" Haight was an American classical scholar and academic who specialised in Latin teaching. She spent most of her career working for Vassar College in Poughkeepsie,New York. Haight was the second female president of the American Philological Association,and first woman to chair the Advisory Council of the American School of Classical Studies at Rome. She published eleven books in the field of Classics,as well as histories of Vassar and James Monroe Taylor. Her works focused on Latin Literature and the Greek novel,before she began the study of symbolism in Latin literature in her final publications. She was involved in Vassar's war efforts during World War I,and supporting foreign scholars during World War II,and was consistently interested in promoting women's education as a force for good in American society.
Philip Gillespie Bainbrigge studied at Eton and had taken a first in classics at Trinity College,Cambridge. While he was an undergraduate at Trinity College he met C. K. Scott Moncrieff and became his friend and lover. From 1914,he became a classics master at Shrewsbury School.

Emily Greenwood is Professor of the Classics and of Comparative Literature at Harvard University. She was formerly professor of Classics and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University and John M. Musser Professor of Classics and Chair of the Department of Classics at Yale University. Her research focuses on Ancient Greek historiography,particularly Thucydides and Herodotus,the development of History as a genre and a modern critical discipline,and local and transnational black traditions of interpreting Greek and Roman classics. Her work explores the appropriation and reinvention of Greco-Roman classical antiquity from the late nineteenth century to the present.
Elizabeth Vandiver is associate professor of classics and Clement Biddle Penrose professor of Latin at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. She was formerly director of the Honors Humanities program at the University of Maryland at College Park, where she also taught in the Department of Classics.
