In Greek mythology,Styx,also called the River Styx,is a goddess and river of the Underworld. Her parents were the Titans Oceanus and Tethys,and she was the wife of the Titan Pallas,and the mother of Zelus,Nike,Kratos,and Bia. She sided with Zeus in his war against the Titans,and because of this,to honor her,Zeus decreed that the solemn oaths of the gods be sworn by the water of Styx.

Edith Hall,is a British scholar of classics,specialising in ancient Greek literature and cultural history,and professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University. In 2012 she was awarded a Humboldt Research Prize to study ancient Greek theatre in the Black Sea,and in 2014 she was elected to the Academy of Europe. She lives in Cambridgeshire.

Michael Courtney Jenkins Putnam is an American classicist specializing in Latin literature,but has also studied literature written in many other languages. Putnam has been particularly influential in his publications concerning Virgil‘s ‘’Aeneid‘’. He is the son of politician and businessman Roger Putnam. Putnam received his B.A.,M.A.,and Ph. D. from Harvard. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1959 he taught at Smith College for a year. He then moved on to teach at Brown University and served as W. Duncan MacMillan II Professor of Classics and a professor of comparative literature for 48 years before retiring in 2008. He was awarded the 1963 Rome Prize,and was later a Resident (1970) and Mellon Professor in Charge of the Classical School (1989-91). He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1996 and the American Philosophical Society in 1998.

Elizabeth Gwyn Caskey was a Canadian-American classical scholar,professor,and archaeologist,known for her work in the excavations at Lerna and Kea,which are of importance to Greek prehistory. As an archaeologist she worked with her husband,Jack Caskey,on excavations where she supervised the trenches of every annual dig and their fortifications. She also wrote summaries of the excavations. Agnata Frances Butler was a British classics scholar. She was among the first generation of women to take the Classical Tripos examinations at the University of Cambridge,and was the only person to be placed in the top division of the first class at the end of her third year,in 1887. She married the Master of Trinity College,Henry Montagu Butler,in August 1888,becoming the leading hostess in Cambridge. She published a version of Book VII of Herodotus' Histories in 1891.
Elizabeth Hazelton "Hazel" Haight was an American classical scholar and academic who specialised in Latin teaching. She spent most of her career working for Vassar College in Poughkeepsie,New York. Haight was the second female president of the American Philological Association,and first woman to chair the Advisory Council of the American School of Classical Studies at Rome. She published eleven books in the field of Classics,as well as histories of Vassar and James Monroe Taylor. Her works focused on Latin Literature and the Greek novel,before she began the study of symbolism in Latin literature in her final publications. She was involved in Vassar's war efforts during World War I,and supporting foreign scholars during World War II,and was consistently interested in promoting women's education as a force for good in American society.
Philip Gillespie Bainbrigge studied at Eton and had taken a first in classics at Trinity College,Cambridge. While he was an undergraduate at Trinity College he met C. K. Scott Moncrieff and became his friend and lover. From 1914,he became a classics master at Shrewsbury School.

Emily Greenwood is Professor of the Classics and of Comparative Literature at Harvard University. She was formerly professor of Classics and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University and John M. Musser Professor of Classics and Chair of the Department of Classics at Yale University. Her research focuses on Ancient Greek historiography,particularly Thucydides and Herodotus,the development of History as a genre and a modern critical discipline,and local and transnational black traditions of interpreting Greek and Roman classics. Her work explores the appropriation and reinvention of Greco-Roman classical antiquity from the late nineteenth century to the present.

Elizabeth Vandiver is associate professor of classics and Clement Biddle Penrose professor of Latin at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. She was formerly director of the Honors Humanities program at the University of Maryland at College Park, where she also taught in the Department of Classics. She completed her undergraduate work at Shimer College and went on to earn her M.A. and Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin.
