Ellen-Adele Harper (Born Dale Allen Pfeiffer; March 30, 1958) is a geologist and writer from Michigan, U.S. who investigated and wrote about energy depletion and potential future resource wars. She also wrote about class war, sustainability, direct action and the environment. She is also an anarchist activist and a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. In 1999, She was one of the organizers of a hunger strike to provide medical care for the incarcerated Leonard Peltier. [1]
In 2001 She began writing articles regarding energy at From The Wilderness. In 2003 she wrote their often cited article on peak oil and food production titled Eating Fossil Fuels. [2] In 2005 she ended her association with the website and its founder, Michael C. Ruppert. In 2006, she expanded the Eating Fossil Fuels article into a book. [3]
Ms. Harper believed that energy depletion will have a major impact upon the socioeconomic system that will not be resolved by turning to renewable energy alone. Through mathematical modeling, she predicted that energy consumption has grown to the point that we will never sustain our current consumption levels without plentiful and cheap fossil fuels.
She argued that we must cut our consumption, abandoning the current socioeconomic system in favor of re-localization, sustainability and decentralization. She believed it is possible for human society to achieve equitable, sustainable stability while maintaining a reasonable quality of life. To reach this goal, she recommended direct action on a grassroots level, as opposed to a reliance upon government and business.
In 2007, she retired from writing nonfiction. Since that time, she has been busy writing fiction under a pen name (PD Allen). [4] [5] In 2022, she came out as transgender. [6] In 2023, she had her name and gender legally changed to Ellen-Adele Harper, female. [7] [8] In 2024, she had her genes karotyped and discovered that she is intersex, having XXY genes, a condition known as Klinefelter syndrome. [9] Ms. Harper is now a published author, noted poet, a transgender and intersex activist, a model, and a performance artist. [10] [11]

A fossil fuel is a carbon compound- or hydrocarbon-containing material formed naturally in the Earth's crust from the buried remains of prehistoric organisms, a process that occurs within geological formations. Reservoirs of such compound mixtures, such as coal, petroleum and natural gas, can be extracted and burnt as a fuel for human consumption to provide energy for direct use, to power heat engines that can propel vehicles, or to generate electricity via steam turbine generators. Some fossil fuels are further refined into derivatives such as kerosene, gasoline and diesel, or converted into petrochemicals such as polyolefins (plastics), aromatics and synthetic resins.
An energy crisis or energy shortage is any significant bottleneck in the supply of energy resources to an economy. In literature, it often refers to one of the energy sources used at a certain time and place, in particular, those that supply national electricity grids or those used as fuel in industrial development. Population growth has led to a surge in the global demand for energy in recent years. In the 2000s, this new demand – together with Middle East tension, the falling value of the US dollar, dwindling oil reserves, concerns over peak oil, and oil price speculation – triggered the 2000s energy crisis, which saw the price of oil reach an all-time high of $147.30 per barrel ($926/m3) in 2008.

Some methods let us track sustainable development. These include the UN Human Development Index and ecological footprints.

An energy transition is a major structural change to energy supply and consumption in an energy system. Currently, a transition to sustainable energy is underway to limit climate change. Most of the sustainable energy is renewable energy. Therefore, another term for energy transition is renewable energy transition. The current transition aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy quickly and sustainably, mostly by phasing-down fossil fuels and changing as many processes as possible to operate on low carbon electricity.
