Elysium Healthcare is a private provider of mental health services based in Borehamwood, UK. It was launched in December 2016 and combined sites from the portfolio of Partnerships in Care and The Priory Group when they were sold by Acadia Healthcare. [1] It was owned by BC Partners. [2] In October 2020 Elysium hired JP Morgan to advise on the sale of the business. The price tag was estimated to be circa £900 million. [3] In December 2021 Ramsay Health Care UK bought the company for £775 million. [4]

Facilities

It opened the 75 bed Wellesley Hospital at Chelston near Wellington, Somerset in 2017. It cost £20 million to build and will provide medium and low-secure treatment rehabilitation for patients with a broad range of mental health problems. Up to 75 beds at the hospital will be commissioned by NHS England in collaboration with Devon Partnership NHS Trust. The site was previously managed by Partnerships in Care. Elysium Healthcare has taken over ten of their sites. [5]

It bought Badby Park Ltd in April 2017. [6]

It bought up Crossley Manor School in Rainhill from Raphael Healthcare in 2017 [7] and later acquired specialist learning disability and mental health provider Lighthouse Healthcare, based in Derbyshire. [8] Its acquisition of London Care Partnership (Supported Living) Limited in July 2018 brought it to more than 60 homes. [9]

In October 2019 it acquired Chalkdown House in Swindon from the Disabilities Trust. This is a 20-bed, neurobehavioural site for people with a non-progressive acquired brain injury. [10]

Performance

Concerns were raised about the facilities opened in 2017 at Wellesley Hospital in Wellington, Somerset by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) because there was a "high volume" of assaults by patients on staff and other patients. [11]

The Woodhouse Independent Hospital, in Cheadle, which accommodates up to 39 men with learning disabilities, autism, challenging behaviour and patients with sexual offending histories was placed in special measures by the CQC in September 2019. 90% of ward posts were filled by unqualified support workers and there were insufficient qualified nurses. There was excessive reliance on temporary staff. [12]

Rhodes Wood Hospital, another Elysium Healthcare facility, was rated Good by the CQC when it was bought by Elysium Healthcare in 2016, but was judged Inadequate at the 2019 inspection and the CQC started enforcement action in April 2019 as the hospital was failing to provide safe care and treatment to patients. [13]

Several other hospitals acquired by Elysium Healthcare had, by 2019, run into trouble with CQC and the Welsh regulator and have been given warnings, put into special measures or otherwise restricted. [14]

North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was an NHS foundation trust which provided mental health, learning disability and community health services in fifteen boroughs of North West England. The Trust delivered mental health and learning disability services in Halton, Knowsley, St Helens, Warrington and Wigan, as well as community-based physical health services in Halton, Knowsley, St Helens and Sefton. It also provided services to improve outcomes for people with mental vulnerabilities within the criminal justice system across Greater Manchester, working in partnership with Mitie Care and Custody and Cheshire and Greater Manchester Community Rehabilitation Company.

St Andrew's Healthcare is a large independent charity based at St Andrew's Hospital in Northampton, which provides psychiatric services. It also has sites in Essex, Birmingham and Nottinghamshire. It runs specialist services for adolescents, men, women and older people with mental illness, learning disability, brain injury, autism and dementia and hosts the National Brain Injury Centre. It is a psychiatric hospital and service provider that caters for individuals requiring inpatient care and rehabilitation, and step-down housing.

The Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is an NHS trust that provides mental health, learning disability and eating disorders services. It serves a population of around two million people living in County Durham, Darlington and most of North Yorkshire. It is geographically one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in England.

The Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and learning disability services to the people of Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. The trust also provide some community services in Hampshire for children and young people with mental health problem. They work in partnership with those who use their services, with their staff, with NHS and social care agencies and with the voluntary sector.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust runs a specialist mental health trust and provides learning disabilities, addiction management, acquired brain injury services and the provision of community nursing and therapies services in The City of Liverpool and Sefton. It provides secure mental health services for the North West of England, the West Midlands and Wales, one of only three NHS organisations in England offering high secure services. Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust is an NHS foundation trust which provides community health, mental health and learning disability services across Hampshire. It is one of the largest providers of such services in England.

Cygnet Health Care is an independent provider of mental health services which operates over 150 centres with more than 2,500 beds across the UK. It is a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, which acquired it for £205 million in 2014. It has 15 rehabilitation sites nationwide, comprising 25 wards and 338 beds. Some of the company's clients pay privately, but most are funded by the NHS buying extra capacity. In 2013/4 Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust spent £1.2 million with the company.

Servelec is a health informatics company based in Sheffield and owned by The Access Group. It supplies software to the healthcare, social care and education sectors.

The Potters Bar Clinic is a mental health hospital in Hertfordshire, UK which has 23 acute beds. It is currently owned and run by Elysium Healthcare. The hospital has two wards, Ruby and Crystal originally for men and women respectively. Since then the hospital has been providing CAMHS Tier 4 Low Secure services for young people aged 13 to 18.
