Em Cooper is a British filmmaker and animator. [1] She is best known for her distinctive hand-painted oil-paint animation style and as the director of the oil-painted music video for The Beatles song I'm Only Sleeping released on 1 November 2022 and created with over 1300 of Cooper's oil paintings. [2]
Her direction of the music video for I'm Only Sleeping won it the Grammy Award for Best Music Video at the 66th Grammy Awards. In 2023 the film also won the Jury Award for a Commissioned Film at Annecy International Animation Film Festival; [3] Best Animation at the Shark Music Video Awards; [4] Gold at the Creative Circle Awards (Best Music Video Animation). [5] In 2018 Cooper was nominated for an Emmy for her animation sequences for the PBS features documentary Deej. [6]
Born in Cambridge, England, [7] Cooper works as an animator specialising in combining oil-painted animation with live-action film to create sequences which evoke a stream of consciousness, or portray subjective experience.
Early in her career, after graduating from the Royal College of Art [1] in 2010, Cooper directed the animation sequences for Eric Steel's feature documentary Kiss The Water. The film received critical acclaim by the British press including Time Out, The Times, The Observer, The Financial Times and The Telegraph. The film was later named one of the ten best documentaries of the year by BBC film critic Mark Kermode. In 2015, the film was screened on BBC television. [8]
In 2012, she co-directed the documentary 30%: Women and Politics in Sierra Leone with Anna Cady. The film had its premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. [9] The film deals with difficulties faced by Sierra Leone’s women to be fairly represented in politics and features Salamatu Kamara and Bernadette Lahai.
In 2015 Cooper created sequences for the Amazon Prime series Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street. In 2018 she directed the Time to Get Out TV commercial for Berghaus voiced by Maxine Peake as well as the tv commercial for Andrex with the partnership of Water Aid [10] and in 2021 she worked with Mark Seliger to co-direct the 2021 Stella Artois Christmas Ad, featuring Matt Damon.
Cooper has had her work screened at multiple film festivals including the European Psychoanalytic Film Festival (epff) in 2007 and the International Sándor Ferenczi Conference in Budapest, 2012/2013. In 2015, she won the Gradiva Award for film at the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. In 2018, she directed oil-paint animated TV commercials for Berghaus as well as for Andrex with the partnership of Water Aid. In 2015 she directed the animation for the film Deej. The film was a reframed feature documentary directed by Robert Rooy and broadcast on PBS. In 2018, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her animation film Deej under the Outstanding Art Direction and Graphic Design category. [1] The film Deej was screened as part of America ReFramed on PBS World in the USA on 24 October 2017 and later won the Peabody Award in the USA. [7]

William Gale Vinton was an American animator and filmmaker. Vinton was best known for his Claymation work, alongside creating iconic characters such as The California Raisins. He won an Oscar for his work alongside several Emmy Awards and Clio Awards for his studio's work.
Bill Plympton is an American animator, graphic designer, cartoonist, and filmmaker best known for his 1987 Academy Award–nominated animated short Your Face and his series of shorts featuring a dog character starting with 2004's Guard Dog.

John Cannizzaro Jr., better known as John Canemaker, is an American independent animator, animation historian, author, teacher and lecturer. In 1980, he began teaching and developing the animation program at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts', Kanbar Institute of Film and Television Department. Since 1988 he has directed the program and is currently a tenured full professor. From 2001-2002 he was Acting Chair of the NYU Undergraduate Film and Television Department. In 2006, his film The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation, a 28-minute animated piece about Canemaker's relationship with his father, won the Academy Award for best animated short. In 2007 the same piece picked up an Emmy award for its graphic and artistic design.
Caroline Leaf is a Canadian-American filmmaker, animator, director, tutor and artist. She has produced numerous short animated films and her work has been recognized worldwide. She is best known as one of the pioneering filmmakers at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). She worked at the NFB from 1972 to 1991. During that time, she created the sand animation and paint-on-glass animation techniques. She also tried new hands-on techniques with 70mm IMAX film. Her work is often representational of Canadian culture and is narrative-based. Leaf now lives in London, England, and is a tutor at The National Film and Television School. She maintains a studio in London working in oils and on paper and does landscape drawing with an iPad.
Yellow Submarine is a 1968 animated jukebox musical fantasy adventure comedy film inspired by the music of the Beatles, directed by animation producer George Dunning, and produced by United Artists and King Features Syndicate. Initial press reports stated that the Beatles themselves would provide their own character voices. However, apart from composing and performing the songs, the real Beatles' only participation was in the closing scene of the film; the voices of their animated counterparts were provided by voice actors.

Joanna Priestley is an American contemporary film director, producer, animator and teacher. Her films are in the collections of the Academy Film Archive in Los Angeles and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Priestley has had retrospectives at the British Film Institute, Museum of Modern Art and Hiroshima International Animation Festival in Japan. Bill Plympton calls her the "Queen of independent animation". Priestley lives and works in Portland, Oregon.

The Chicago Eight were charged by the United States federal government with conspiracy, crossing state lines with intent to incite a riot, and other charges related to anti-Vietnam War and countercultural protests in Chicago, Illinois during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

Chel White is an American film director, composer, screenwriter and visual effects artist. In his independent films and music videos, White is known for his stylized, often experimental use of images, unusual animation and narratives depicting an outsider's perspective. He often adopts darkly humorous and poetic sensibilities to explore topics of love, obsession and alienation; with dreams and the subconscious being his greatest influences. He describes his own work as “stories and images that reside on the brink of dreams, or linger on the periphery of distorted memories.” A Rockefeller Fellow, Chel White has made three films based on the work of Peabody Award-winning writer and radio personality Joe Frank.
