Emeralds is an American electronic music trio founded in 2006 by members John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt and Mark McGuire. The band was based in Cleveland, Ohio and then in Portland, Oregon, United States.
Emeralds' sound has been noted for drawing from Ambient music, minimal music, and Kosmische. [2]
John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt and Mark McGuire began playing music together under the name Fancelions in 2005 [3] in Cleveland's western suburbs of Bay Village and Westlake. Shortly thereafter, they re-formed as Emeralds, playing their first show under that name in June 2006. [4] Since then the group has released over forty recordings on various independent labels. The album Does It Look Like I'm Here? , released on Editions Mego in 2010, is their most widely known release to date. It received the Best New Album designation from Pitchfork Media, [5] the Album of the Year award from Drowned in Sound, [6] and accolades from many other publications. Mark McGuire and Steve Hauschildt also perform and record under their own names, while John Elliott does so under a number of monikers including Outer Space and Imaginary Softwoods. The band also maintains multiple labels including McGuire & Elliott's Wagon, Hauschildt's Gneiss Things and Elliott's curated imprint Spectrum Spools. [7]
Emeralds were invited by Godspeed You! Black Emperor to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in December 2010 and again in 2012 by The Afghan Whigs. [8] [9]
In April 2009, the band opened for Throbbing Gristle's reunion tour in Chicago and New York. [10]
From 19 September through 31 October 2010, the band opened for Caribou on a North American tour. [11]
In January 2013, Emeralds announced that Mark McGuire had left the band. [12] Though initially expected to continue as a duo, just weeks later Steve Hauschildt announced his own departure, saying that "the band is now over". [13]
After a decade-long absence; in November 2022, Primavera Sound announced the band have reunited and will perform at the original Barcelona and new Madrid locations of the 2023 Spanish music festival. [14]
Mego was an experimental electronic music independent record label based in Vienna, Austria. The label has been superseded by a new company, Editions Mego, which was set up both to keep Mego albums in print and to issue new albums, run by Peter Rehberg a.k.a. Pita.

His work utilizes guitar and laptop computers to blend melody with treated samples and glitch production. He lives and works in Vienna, and currently records on the UK label Touch.

Keith Fullerton Whitman is an American electronic musician who has recorded albums influenced by many genres, including ambient music, drill and bass, and krautrock. He records and performs using many aliases, of which the best-known is Hrvatski. His works under the Hrvatski moniker mainly fell under the 'drill and bass' subgenre of IDM, and were his main musical outlet in the mid-to-late 1990s. Other solo aliases include ASCIII and Anonymous. Keith was in many bands in the 1990s, including El-Ron, The Liver Sadness, Sheket/Trabant, The Finger Lakes and Gai/Jin.
Peter Rehberg, also known as Pita, was a British-Austrian composer of electronic audio works. He was the head of Editions Mego, which he founded in 2006 as a successor to Mego.

Richard Youngs is an English musician based in Glasgow since the early 1990s. His catalogue of solo and collaborative work formally begins with Advent, first issued in 1990. He has released three solo albums and produces mostly instrumental music that combines electronica and acoustic guitars with psychedelic influences. He has toured internationally as a solo artist supporting among others Julianna Barwick and Jenny Hval while playing headlining shows in Europe, North America, Japan and Australia.
John Elliott is an American electronic musician from Cleveland, Ohio. A former member of Emeralds, Elliott has been involved in a number of solo projects and collaborations including Imaginary Softwoods, Mist, and Outer Space. Elliott also curates the electronic music label Spectrum Spools, as well as Wagon, a label he set up with Emeralds guitarist, Mark McGuire. In 2016, Elliott won the Cleveland Arts Prize for Emerging Artist.
