Same-sex marriage has been legal in Chile since 10 March 2022. The path to legalization began in June 2021 when President Sebastián Piñera announced his administration's intention to sponsor a bill for this cause. The Chilean Senate passed the legislation on 21 July 2021,followed by the Chamber of Deputies on 23 November 2021. Due to disagreements between the two chambers of the National Congress on certain aspects of the bill,a mixed commission was formed to resolve these issues. A unified version of the bill was approved on 7 December 2021. President Piñera signed it into law on 9 December,and it was published in the country's official gazette on 10 December. The law took effect 90 days later,and the first same-sex marriages occurred on 10 March 2022. Chile was the sixth country in South America,the seventh in Latin America and the 29th in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.

A noted activist for the transgender community,Antonelli is the first openly trans person to be elected to the Cortes Generales,as well as the first openly trans person serve in a regional legislature in Spain.
Tamara Adrián is a Venezuelan politician,who was elected to the National Assembly of Venezuela in the 2015 Venezuelan parliamentary election. She is noted as the first openly transgender person elected to office in Venezuela,and only the second openly transgender member of a national legislature in the Western Hemisphere. Some early media coverage credited her as the first openly transgender member of a legislature in the Americas,but this was later corrected due to the election of Michelle Suárez Bértora to the Senate of Uruguay in 2014. In 2023 Tamara became the first openly transgender candidate in a presidential election.
Emilia Iris Nuyado Ancapichún is a Chilean politician of Mapuche-Huillliche descent. Since March 11,2018 she has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies representing the 25th district in the Los Lagos Region. She also became one of the first two Mapuche women elected to the Chilean Congress,together with her conservative counterpart Aracely Leuquén.
General elections were held in Chile on 21 November 2021,including presidential,parliamentary and regional elections. Voters went to the polls to elect the President of the Republic to serve a four-year term,27 of 50 members of the Senate to serve an eight-year term in the National Congress,all 155 members of the Chamber of Deputies to serve a four-year term in the National Congress,and all 302 members of the regional boards to serve a three-year term. Following an electoral reform in 2015,the Senate increased its membership from 38 to 43 in 2017 and grew to its full size of 50 seats after this election.

She did not run for re-election in 2021.
