The channel was launched on August 20, 2013, to compete with CNN, HLN, MSNBC, Fox News, and in certain markets RT America. It was Al Jazeera's second entry into the U.S. television market, after the launch of beIN Sports in 2012. The channel, which had persistently low ratings, announced in January 2016 that it would close on April 12, 2016, citing the "economic landscape".

It is the largest news network in the Middle East and North Africa region. It was founded in 1996 by the then Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Al Jazeera gained popularity in the Arab World as an alternative to the previous landscape of largely local state owned broadcasters, with its early coverage being openly critical of autocratic leaders in the region, as well as hosting a wide range of viewpoints, gaining credibility through its extensive frontline coverage of the Second Intifada and the Iraq War. Independent sources have described Al Jazeera Arabic's news coverage as more partisan than that of Al Jazeera English, with the station openly supporting the 2011 Arab Spring, as well as giving favourable coverage of the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups.
