Endless Sky is a space trading and combat simulation video game, created by Michael Zahniser and first released in June 2015. In Endless Sky, the player starts out as a spaceship captain and can trade, transport passengers or fight pirates to earn money. There are also a few story lines that the player can choose to participate in. The game is similar to games in the Escape Velocity series.
Endless Sky is free software, available under the GPLv3 license [3] in source form and for a variety of operating systems.
Endless Sky is a space trading and combat simulation game. The gameplay is similar to that of Escape Velocity: Nova . [4] The game is played from a top-down perspective in 2D. The player starts the game as a captain of a spaceship. There are various ways to earn money in the game, some of which are: trading commodities, delivering cargo, transporting passengers and stealing from other ships. Player can purchase spaceships, outfits and commodities when landed on planets. Various aspects of ships can also be modified, including engines, weapons, shield generators and other outfits. There are several different story lines involving different human and alien factions.
The stable version of Endless Sky currently comes with one human and one incomplete alien campaign, as well as many shorter mission chains.
It is possible to create and distribute additional content, such as alien species, campaigns and map additions. These add-ons, officially known as plugins, currently need to be installed and updated by manually downloading the plugin's files and placing them in the appropriate directory, and can be removed by deleting these files. Endless Sky takes place in the Milky Way galaxy. Various star systems are connected by hyperspace links which allow the ships to travel between the star systems, although it is possible to travel between star systems not joined by a hyperspace link, but it requires outfits that are difficult to obtain. There are various human and alien factions in the game that can be either friendly or hostile towards other factions and the player. [6]
Endless Sky currently has 18 factions. Each faction controls a region of space, and each race can be split into several different factions. In addition, there are also three factions that are known to have gone extinct at the time of gameplay. The exact spaceships used by the factions, and the territory controlled by them, change during the course of the various campaigns.
The game is programmed in C++. OpenGL is used to render the game. It is cross-platform, and runs on Windows, Linux and macOS. Over 300 contributors have contributed code and content to the game. [7]

Upon the game's Steam Greenlight campaign, Adam Smith of Rock Paper Shotgun called Endless Sky "caught somewhere between the 4X majesty of Endless Space and the interstellar tourism of No Man's Sky ", describing it as "like catnip to me". [11] In his impressions upon the game's successful Steam release, he noted that the most impressive part of the game was the reactive nature of AI vessels, also noting the dynamic nature of the galaxy. Calling it a "special game", he relayed his belief that "I think Space Rangers 2 has finally been replaced". [12]
Alexandru Chirila of Softpedia said that the game was casual and easy to pick up, but had a lot to offer, noting the amount of missions on each inhabited planet. While he stated that the graphics did not "look fantastic", he nevertheless noted that it "held its own". [13] Linux Voice called the game "a great deal of fun", saying that, despite its top-down view, it "still looks great", and calling it "ideal for younger people" due to its trading simulation gameplay. [14] Gameplay Magazine called it one of the best free games in a long time, describing it as both impressive and well-presented. [15]
Escape Velocity is a single-player role-playing space trading and combat video game series first introduced in 1996 by Ambrosia Software for the Macintosh. Two other similar games based on the original, EV Override and Escape Velocity Nova, followed in 1998 and 2002 respectively, the latter of which is also available on Microsoft Windows. In addition there is a trading card game available based on the storyline of the EV Nova universe.
Escape Velocity Nova is a video game developed by Ambrosia Software in collaboration with ATMOS. It is the third game in the Escape Velocity series of space trading and combat games. It was released on March 19, 2002 for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9, and later ported to Windows and released on July 11, 2003. The game's premise, set in a time period after mankind has discovered hyperspace technology, grants the player freedom to take missions, trade goods, steal from other ships, and enter one of six storylines.
Spasim is a 32-player 3D networked space flight simulation game and first-person space shooter developed by Jim Bowery for the PLATO computer network and released in March 1974. The game features four teams of eight players, each controlling a planetary system, where each player controls a spaceship in 3D space in first-person view. Two versions of the game were released: in the first, gameplay is limited to flight and space combat, and in the second systems of resource management and strategy were added as players cooperate or compete to reach a distant planet with extensive resources while managing their own systems to prevent destructive revolts. Although Maze is believed to be the earliest 3D game and first-person shooter as it had shooting and multiplayer by fall 1973, Spasim has previously been considered along with it to be one of the "joint ancestors" of the first-person shooter genre, due to earlier uncertainty over Maze's development timeline.
The Precursors is a 2009 first-person shooter game developed by Ukrainian game studio Deep Shadows. The game was released for Windows in Russia on 4 December 2009. It was then released worldwide through GamersGate on 21 December 2010 and through Steam on 4 February 2017. It is set in a futuristic sci-fi environment where many political factions are engaged in an intergalactic war. The player is able to explore a multitude of planets, travel through outer space to complete missions, obtain information, and buy weapons and supplies in an open world free-roaming environment. It received mixed reviews from critics.
Ironseed is a 1994 MS-DOS video game, developed and published by Channel 7. It is a space trading and combat game with real-time strategy elements.
The Battle for Wesnoth is a free and open-source turn-based strategy video game with a high fantasy setting, designed by Australian-American developer David White and first released in June 2003. In Wesnoth, the player controls a particular faction/race and attempts to build a powerful army by controlling villages and defeating enemies for experience. The game is loosely based on the Sega Genesis games Master of Monsters and Warsong.

Xenonauts is a turn-based science fiction video game developed and published as the maiden title of London-based independent game studio Goldhawk Interactive. Inspired by the 1994 game X-COM: UFO Defense, gameplay involves the player taking the role of the commander of a clandestine organization known as the Xenonauts, and attempting to defeat an alien invasion of Earth in the alternative history year 1979. The game was released on June 17, 2014 for Microsoft Windows. Ports to Mac OS X and Linux were initially based on the Wine compatibility layer, until native ports became available in September 2015. A sequel, Xenonauts 2, was released through early access in 2023.
Miner Wars 2081 is a six degrees of freedom action-survival space-shooter simulation game produced by Keen Software House. The gameplay offers a choice of single player, co-op, and deathmatch multi-player. The game is set in the year 2081, 11 years after the destruction of all planetary objects in the Solar System. The story introduces the player to many types of missions: rescue, exploration, revenge, base defense, theft, transportation, stealth, search and destroy, pure harvesting or racing. A multiplayer spin-off game, Miner Wars Arena, was also released in 2012.
Space Pirates and Zombies (S.P.A.Z.) is a real-time strategy video game released on August 15, 2011, on the Steam distribution platform. with a top-down perspective based around space combat. The game was developed by a two-man team under the studio MinMax Games using the Torque engine. The game was later ported for Mac OS X and Linux systems.
Tales of Maj'Eyal is an open-source roguelike video game released for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in 2012. Tales of Maj'Eyal is available as donation-supported freeware (donationware) from the developers; donations grant some exclusive online features as part of a freemium model. Convoy is a video game released on April 21, 2015 for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux, and as Convoy: A Tactical Roguelike on April 8, 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One under a revised format. The game features pixel art graphics and roguelike squad based tactical combat. In Convoy, the player must scour the wastelands of a desert planet in a defensively outfitted semi-trailer truck for parts to a crashed spaceship. The plot is experienced through interactive text based dialogue, where the player picks responses to written scenarios. The outcome of these scenarios sometimes turns in to tactical combat.
Cosmonautica is a video game that blends aspects of life simulation and space trading. Players take control of a spaceship and crew it with characters, each of which has their own needs and skills. By acquiring credits through missions, players can expand and customize their ship. It was released via early access on PC in 2014, and the retail version was released in July 2015 for Microsoft Windows, iOS, and Android.
