Enrique Luis Graue Wiechers (born January 9,1951) is a Mexican ophthalmologist and academic who served as rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico from 2015 to 2023.
Graue Wiechers entered Preparatory School No. 4 in 1967 and was part of various committees and student groups in the student protests of the late 1960s, [1] including being the student body president of the school in 1969. [2] He graduated from the UNAM Faculty of Medicine in 1975 as a surgical doctor and then in 1978 with a specialty in ophthalmology. He later studied Biology and Surgery of Cornea Transplants at the University of Florida. [3]
Beginning in 1975,Graue Wiechers taught at the Faculty of Medicine. He became the coordinator of the Academic Ophthalmology Committee and then the Chief of the Division of Graduate Studies and Research,a post he occupied from 2004 to 2008. He was named to be dean of the Faculty of Medicine in January 2008 and reelected to the position in 2012. [4]
Graue has served on various committees in his specialty. He was the only Mexican to sit on the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and has been the president of the Mexican Ophthalmology Society (1990),the Mexican Ophthalmology Council (2004–06),and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (2005–07),as well as vice president of the International Ophthalmology Council. He is currently the president of the National Academy of Medicine. [3] [5]
On November 6,2015,Graue Wiechers was unanimously selected as the next rector of the UNAM. [4] Graue succeeds JoséNarro Robles,another doctor,who occupied the post from 2007 to 2015. He is the tenth doctor to be rector of UNAM. [1] On November 8,2019,he was reappointed until 2023. [6]
Graue wrote the book Oftalmología en la Práctica de la Medicina General (Ophthalmology in the Practice of General Medicine) and has edited three books related to medical education. [1] He has more than 100 publications in the field. [2]
Graue met his wife during high school in the late 1960s. His son,also named Enrique,is a fourth-generation ophthalmologist. [1]
Since 2002,Graue has been the president of the Patronato de la Fundación Conde de Valenciana IAP,a non-profit organization devoted to ophthalmology. [2] He had previously been the chief of the foundation's cornea department from 1980 to 1990. [5]

Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez is a Mexican psychiatrist,academician and politician who served as Secretary of Health in the cabinet of President Ernesto Zedillo (1994–1999) and as rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) from 1999 to 2007. The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara,commonly abbreviated to UAG or Autónoma,is a coeducational,independent,private university based in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. Established in 1935,it was the first private university and medical school in Mexico. The creation of the university was a conservative response to a more-left wing direction being taken in Mexico in public higher education at the time. It was first conceived with the name Universidad del Occidente,but would later be styled to Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG).
The 1999–2000 strike and shutdown of the UNAM had its origins in the January 1999 announcement by its latest rector that tuition would increase significantly and graduation requirements would become more restrictive. In response,a large group of students declared a strike and blockaded the main campus to the point of institutional paralysis. The blockades intensified and eventually led to the university's closure,during which there were violent encounters between opposition groups,students,guards and faculty. The crisis led to the eventual resignation of the university's rector and appointment of a new one. Along the way,bloody conflicts resulted in serious injuries and even fatalities on the unlawfully occupied campus. Eventual action by the recently created federal police finally ended the occupation during February 2000.

JoséNarro Robles is a Mexican physician,researcher,academic,and politician. He is a former director of the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and was elected its 23rd Rector on November 20,2007. After two 4-year periods leading UNAM,in February 2016,he was appointed by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to replace Mercedes Juan as head of the Mexican Secretariat of Health.

UNAM'sSchool of Medicine is the medical school of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM),located at the university's main campus of Ciudad Universitaria. Established in 1553 as part of the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico,it is one of the oldest medical schools in the Americas. The school has undergraduate and graduate studies departments. It does joint teaching with some other schools,e.g.,the School of Science. It also has many grants involving UNAM's Engineering School,in areas such as smart and connected health. Jeewan Singh Titiyal is an Indian ophthalmologist,credited with the first live cornea transplant surgery by an Indian doctor. He was honoured by the Government of India,in 2014,by bestowing on him the Padma Shri,the fourth highest civilian award,for his services to the field of medicine.
Gullapalli Nageswara Rao is an Indian ophthalmologist,the chairman of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI) and the founder of the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute,Hyderabad. A former associate professor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Rochester,Rao is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences,India. He was honored by the Government of India,in 2002,with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri. He was elected in 2017 to the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame instituted by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Berthold Seitz is a German ophthalmologist,professor and director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg,Saarland. He is known for his scientific contributions in the fields of cornea transplantation,cataract surgery and artificial lens-calculation after refractive corneal surgery as well as techniques of amniotic membrane transplantation and its histological integration patterns in the cornea.
On January 18,2017,15-year-old high school student Federico Guevara opened fire with a .22 caliber handgun inside a classroom at Colegio Americano del Noreste in Monterrey,Nuevo León,Mexico. Guevara then attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself but missed,then ran out of ammunition. Students Ana Cecilia Ramos and Luis Fernando Martínez,both 14 years old,and 24-year-old teacher Cecilia Cristina Solís,suffered critical head injuries. They were listed in critical condition. After two months,Cecilia died in the hospital. 14-year-old Mariel Chávez suffered an arm injury but was declared stable. Guevara had psychological problems.
The 2018 UNAM student movement began on August 27,2018 with the protests of the Azcapotzalco College of Sciences and Humanities in Mexico,where they demanded solutions to the problems of both their campus and the CCH in general. The On August 31,the principal of the campus resigned from her position due to the repression of the demands,but when not all were met,the students took over the facilities.
