EnviroCAB is a taxicab service provider based in Arlington County, Virginia, which provides service exclusively with a fleet of hybrid electric vehicles. When the company began operations in February 2008 it became the first all-hybrid taxicab fleet in the United States, and the first carbon negative taxicab company in the world. [1] [2]

History

In September 2007 the Arlington County Board authorized EnviroCAB, then a new taxi company, to operate with an all-hybrid fleet of 50 vehicles. In addition, the Board authorized existing companies permission to add 35 hybrid taxis. The introduction of green taxis is part of a county campaign known as Fresh AIRE, or Arlington Initiative to Reduce Emissions. AIRE aims to cut production of greenhouse gases from county buildings and vehicles by 10% by 2012. [3]

Description

EnviroCAB taxi fleet consist of Toyota Priuses, Toyota Camry Hybrids, Toyota Highlander Hybrids, and Ford Escape Hybrids. [2]

Carbon footprint

The company claims to be the first carbon-negative taxicab company in the world, as it will completely offset its own emissions by purchasing "clean-source" offset credits. Also, EnviroCAB expects to offset the emissions of 100 of the approximately 685 non-hybrid taxis operating in Arlington by March 2008. [2]

Taxis of New York City

In New York City, taxicabs come in two varieties: yellow and green; they are widely recognizable symbols of the city. Taxis painted yellow are able to pick up passengers anywhere in the five boroughs. Those painted apple green, which began to appear in August 2013, are allowed to pick up passengers in Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Both types have the same fare structure. Taxicabs are operated by private companies and licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). It also oversees over 40,000 other for-hire vehicles, including "black cars", commuter vans, and ambulettes.

Toyota Comfort Motor vehicle

A taxi, also known as a cab or a taxicab, is a type of vehicle for hire with a driver, used by a single passenger or small group of passengers, often for a non-shared ride. A taxicab conveys passengers between locations of their choice. This differs from public transport where the pick-up and drop-off locations are decided by the service provider, not by the customers, although demand responsive transport and share taxis provide a hybrid bus/taxi mode.

Clean Air Cab was an Arizona-based carbon-neutral taxi service provider, and the second taxi fleet in the U.S. to use only hybrid vehicles. Based in Mesa, Arizona, it served the Phoenix area with environmentally friendly transportation service by using clean automotive technology. Clean Air cab ceased operations November 2016.

Low emission buses in London

There are 3,773 hybrid buses, 316 electric buses, and two hydrogen buses operating in London, as of March 2020, out of a total bus fleet of 9,102. This had increased to 450 zero emissions buses in March 2021, and due to become 750 buses by the end of 2021. The city has the second-largest electric bus fleet in Europe after Moscow, which has over 500 electric buses operating. The first hybrid bus was introduced on route 360 in 2006 and over 300 were in passenger service by July 2012. The world's first double-decker hybrid bus was introduced in London from January 2007, and the world's first double-decker electric bus in 2015. As of 2021, Transport for London plans for all buses in London to be zero emissions by 2037, although according to the Mayor of London this could be brought forward to 2030 with government funding.

Ecoigo is an environmentally conscious London-based company, which offers corporate taxicab, chauffeur and private hire in the United Kingdom. In 2011, Jonathan Broom sold his shares in Ecoigo in order to offer support, advice and investment to startup companies and to build his own home which was featured on Grand Designs. In April 2014 Ecoigo went into administration and was bought by WestOne Cars, which is owned by Addison Lee.

Toyota JPN Taxi Motor vehicle

The Toyota JPN Taxi is a taxicab sold by Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota Motor East Japan is in charge of manufacturing the car for the Japanese market.

Green Tomato Cars is a London-based taxi service that focuses on being environmentally friendly. Customers can order a taxi by phone, through the company's website, or by using a smartphone app, similar to Uber. They were the first car service in London to operate the Toyota Prius as their flagship car, and the first to use the Toyota Mirai – a hydrogen fuel cell zero emissions vehicle. As of 2019, Green Tomato Cars had a fleet of more than 600 Toyota Prius hybrids, and plug-in hybrid and zero emission executive cars. Green Tomato Cars was acquired from Transdev in December 2018.
