Eo-Navia is one of eight comarca administrative divisions of the province and autonomous community of Asturias in Spain.

Culture and history

Eonavian, a Galician dialect, is spoken in the region. [1] This administrative division should not be confused with the historical comarca of Eo-Navia or Old Common Council of Castropol.

The dialects have been variously classified as the northeastern varieties of Galician, as a linguistic group of its own, or as a dialect of transition between Galician and Asturian, an opinion upheld by José Luis García Arias, the former president of the Academy of the Asturian Language (ALLA).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Old Common Council of Castropol</span>

Old Common Council of Castropol, also Eo-Navia Land, Entrambasauguas or Honor de Suarón and Grandas is the name that was historically given to the sixteen westernmost villages of Asturias located between the Eo and Navia rivers. These villages belonged to the sixth sección or party that made up the Junta General del Principado, the historical governing body of Asturias. Episcopalías was composed by the following villages or concejos: Castropol, Rivera de Abajo, Rivera de Arriba, Langreo, Llanera, Quirós, Teverga, Noreña, Las Regueras, Navia, Morcín, Tudela, Proaza, Santo Adriano, Pajares, Riosa, Olloniego, Yernes y Tameza, Bimenes, Paderni, Sobrescobio and Peñaflor.

<i>Galicia irredenta</i> Term used for the Galician-speaking territories outside of Galicia

Galicia irredenta or Galicia estremeira, also spelled as Galiza irredenta and Galiza estremeira and also known as Faixa Leste or Franxa Leste, is a term used for all Galician-speaking territories located outside of Galicia. These are all located in Spain, in either Asturias or Castile and León. These territories are sometimes divided into three subregions: El Bierzo, Eo-Navia and As Portelas.
