Equestrian was contested at the 1998 Asian Games in Fort Adison Riding Club, Saraburi, Thailand. Equestrian was contested from 8 to 19 December 1998. There were three equestrian disciplines: dressage, eventing and jumping. All three disciplines are further divided into individual and team contests for a total of six events.

At the 1900 Summer Olympics, five equestrian events were contested. The competition was held from 29 May to 2 June at the Place de Breteuil in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, as part of the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The equestrian events were organised by the Société Hippique Française and titled as the Concours Hippique International, with competitors from eight countries competing in three jumping and two driving events.

The equestrian events at the 1956 Summer Olympics were held in Stockholm due to the Australian quarantine regulations and included dressage, eventing, and show jumping. All three disciplines had both individual and team competitions. The competitions were held from 11 to 17 June 1956 at Stockholm Olympic Stadium. There were 158 entries from 29 National Olympic Committees: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Soviet Union, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, USA and Venezuela. This would be the first appearance for Australia, Cambodia and Venezuela in equestrian events.
The equestrian events at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo included show jumping, dressage and eventing. All three disciplines had both individual and team competitions. The competitions were held from 16 to 24 October 1964. These events took place at Karuizawa, which would become the first city to host Summer and Winter Olympic event when it hosted the curling events for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.
The events of the Equestrian at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games featured the equestrian discipline jumping. The discipline was divided into individual and team contests. It was the only event open to all genders.
The 1998 Asian Games, officially known as the 13th Asian Games and the XIII Asiad, was an Asian multi-sport event celebrated in Bangkok, Thailand from December 6 to 20, 1998, with 377 events in 36 sports and disciplines participated by 6,554 athletes across the continent. The football event commenced on 30 November 1998, a week earlier than the opening ceremony.

Equestrian competitions in all three disciplines at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics were held from 9 August to 21 August at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and Sheung Yue River in Hong Kong. It was the second time that the equestrian events were hosted by a member of the IOC other than the member hosting the main games. This is a list of sports played in the biennial Southeast Asian Games. Unlike the Olympic games, there are no official limits to the number of sports which may be contested, and the range may be decided by the organising host pending approval by the Southeast Asian Games Federation. Albeit for some core sports which must be featured, the host is also free to introduce other sports. Over time, this has meant as much as 43 sports in the 24th edition of the games, and the programme has included relatively obscure sports such as arnis, finswimming and pétanque.

Wushu was contested by both men and women at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand from December 16 to December 19, 1998. It was competed in the disciplines of Taijiquan, Changquan, Nanquan and Sanda. All events were held at Thammasat Gymnasium 6. Changquan event consisted of Changquan, one long weapon discipline and one short weapon discipline.
