Eric Favors (born 16 November 1996) [1] is an American-born athlete who competes in the shot put for Ireland. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] He currently holds the Irish national record in the event. [9]

Career

Summer Universiade 2019

In 2019, Favors competed at the Summer Universiade, where he finished 10th in the shot put.

2022 season

In 2022, Favors finished 10th overall at the European Throwing Cup, recording a best mark of 19.70 meters. He also participated in the European Athletics Championships, where he placed 15th in the qualification round, failing to advance to the final. Later that year, he competed in his first World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, finishing 20th out of 30 participants with a best throw of 19.76 meters, again not advancing to the final.

2023 season

In 2023, Favors improved his performance at the European Throwing Cup, finishing 5th with a throw of 20.66 meters. He also played a significant role in Ireland's promotion at the 2023 European Games by winning the shot put event in Division 3, although he did not win a medal. At his second World Championships, Favors finished 23rd out of 37 competitors.

2024 season and Paris Olympics

In April 2024 Eric Broke the National Record throwing 20.93m. Favors narrowly missed advancing to the final at the European Championships, finishing 14th, one place better than his 2022 performance. Despite not meeting the entry standards, he qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris based on his Olympic rankings. He finished 18th in the shot put with a best mark of 19.02 meters.

Personal life

Eric Favors is eligible to represent Ireland due to his family connections in Ballina, County Mayo. Before focusing on athletics, Favors played American football in high school. He also maintains a YouTube channel with 11,100 subscribers, where he shares videos on shot put workouts and training sessions.

The men's shot put event at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program was held at the Olympic Stadium on Friday, 22 September. The shot put has been ever present since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. Thirty-seven athletes from 27 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The qualifying athletes progressed through to the final where the qualifying distances were scrapped and they started afresh with up to six throws. The event was won by Arsi Harju of Finland, the nation's first victory in the men's shot put since 1920 and first medal in the event since 1936. Americans Adam Nelson and John Godina took silver and bronze, respectively, with Godina becoming the 12th man to earn multiple shot put medals.

The men's shot put event was part of the track and field athletics programme at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. Twenty athletes from 14 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The competition was held on 21 July at Helsinki Olympic Stadium. The finals were swept by the United States, with Americans Parry O'Brien taking the gold medal, Darrow Hooper earning silver and Jim Fuchs receiving his second consecutive bronze medal in the event. It was the 10th victory for an American in the event, and the fifth medal sweep for the United States. Fuchs was the third man to win multiple medals in the shot put.

Edward Sarul is a former Polish track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. He was the inaugural champion at the World Championships in Athletics in 1983. He also won the gold medal at the 1983 European Cup. A six-time Polish champion in the shot put, he held the Polish record for the event for twenty-six years with his personal best of 21.68 metres.

Ryan Keith Whiting is an American track and field athlete who competes in the shot put and has a personal record of 22.28 meters outdoors and 22.35 meters indoors. He represented the United States at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, 2013 World Championships in Athletics, 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2012 London Olympics.

Nathan Stephens is a Welsh former Paralympian athlete competing mainly in category F57–58 throwing events. He was until September 2012 the world record holder in the F57 javelin throw.

Raven "Hulk" Saunders is an American track and field athlete who competes in shot put. They were the silver medalist in women's shot put at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, throwing a distance of 19.79 m. They won four NCAA collegiate titles in shot put, both indoor and outdoor, at Southern Illinois University and University of Mississippi. They were a world junior silver medalist in 2014 and the Pan American junior champion in 2015. Saunders finished 11th in women's shot put at the 2024 Paris Olympics, throwing a distance of 17.79 m. They hold a personal record of 19.96 m for the shot put.

Her personal best of 64.96 meters for the discus throw was achieved in 2023.
