Erin Robinson Swink is a Canadian indie game designer and developer. In 2011, Fast Company named her one of the most influential women in technology. In 2015, University of California, Santa Cruz appointed her creative director of the Baskin School of Engineering's master's programme in games and playable media. She later joined Dutch game developer Guerrilla Games as a senior quest designer.

Personal life and education

Erin Robinson is originally from Toronto. [1] She was raised in Markham, Ontario, until she was 10 years old. [2] The first game she ever purchased was The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain (1994). She earned money for the game by doing household chores as a child, remarking later that "maybe associating video games with chores was the reason I became a developer." [3] She also played Myst and King's Quest VII . [1] Robinson has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. [1] [4] Her college thesis was on spatial memory and the translation of experience into memory. [5] She worked as a research assistant at a psychology lab. Unhappy with her work, she eventually quit to become a game developer. [6] She has been inspired by the work of Marjane Satrapi, particularly her graphic novel Persepolis . [7] She lives in Chicago, Illinois. [8] She is firm supporter of the fight against climate change, and has called for video game companies to divest their investments in fossil fuel companies. [9]

Work

Robinson worked from home as an independent video game developer under her own indie game label "Ivy Games." [9] She started in 2005. The first game she ever designed, Spooks, [10] was about a dead girl who tries to save a goldfish. The game was designed on MS Paint. When she first started designing video games, she kept it a secret from her friends because she thought it was "super geeky." [8] She developed the concept, mechanics, and artwork, and hired computer programmers to code the game logic. [6] Many of her games have a retro design feel. [8] Her early games were released as freeware. [6] These freeware games included Spooks, Little Girl in Underland, and Nanobots. [3] Her first paid gig in video games was in 2007, when she did done artwork for Blackwell Unbound . [8] [11] She has released two independently funded games: Puzzle Bots , a point and click puzzle adventure game, and Gravity Ghost , a game about a ghost girl on a mission to save the galaxy. [12] In the game Gravity Ghost she experimented with alternative forms of game story-telling, which allows the player to learn how to navigate the fictional world as the same rate as the character. She has stressed the importance of the introspective journey to this particular game. [13] A PlayStation 4 version of Gravity Ghost was released in 2019. [11]

Robinson has taught indie gaming classes at Columbia College Chicago. She was named one of the most influential women in technology, in 2011, by Fast Company. [6] She has spoken at Game Developers Conference about video games being used in neuroscience as rehabilitative therapy. She talked about her findings that video games are increasingly being used in medical and rehabilitative therapy and that playing First-Person Shooters improves visual and auditory perception. [3] [8] In 2015, she was named the creative director of the master's degree programme in games and playable media at the Silicon Valley Center of the University of California, Santa Cruz. [4] [14] She later joined Dutch game developer Guerrilla Games, known for the Killzone and Horizon games, as a senior quest designer. [11] [15]

<i>Braid</i> (video game) 2008 puzzle platform video game

Braid is a puzzle-platform video game developed by Number None and considered an indie title. The game was originally released in August 2008 for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade service. Ports were developed and released for Microsoft Windows in April 2009, Mac OS X in May 2009, PlayStation 3 in November 2009, and Linux in December 2010. Jonathan Blow designed the game as a personal critique of contemporary trends in video game development. He self-funded the three-year project, working with webcomic artist David Hellman to develop the artwork. An anniversary version is planned for release for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, Windows, Mac, and Linux with updated graphics and developer commentary.

<i>Sissys Magical Ponycorn Adventure</i> 2011 video game

Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure is a 2011 indie graphic adventure game developed by Untold Entertainment Inc. founder Ryan Creighton and illustrated and voiced by his then-five-year-old daughter Cassie Creighton. It was released as a browser game on computers, and later released on the iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook. The game follows the titular character Sissy, voiced by Cassie, as she searches for fictional creatures called Ponycorns, a portmanteau of the words pony and unicorn. Cassie drew the artwork at the Toronto Game Jam. Ryan then integrated the art into the Untold Graphic Adventure Game System (UGAGS) that the game uses. The game received positive reception for its cute appearance, Cassie's ambitious design, and her voice acting.

Increpare Games Ltd is a British video game developer based in London, founded and operated by Stephen Lavelle. Lavelle uses the pseudonym "Increpare", the Latin word for "rebuke". Lavelle has released over 425 games since 2004, mostly small freeware games and often at the rate of several projects per month. With 178 games released between 2008 and 2014, Lavelle was named the "most prolific independent game developer" in the 2016 iteration of the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. <i>Gravity Ghost</i> 2015 video game

Gravity Ghost is a physics based puzzle game created by indie developer Ivy Games. It was released on Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux on 26 January 2015. In Gravity Ghost, the player controls the ghost of a young girl named Iona, who flies through a fantasised version of space with her friend, a ghost fox. As a living girl, Iona lives on a secluded island with her three sisters, her mother and father. The eldest sister, Hickory, becomes their guardian after the sudden death of their parents. The plot is revealed gradually through a series of animated cutscenes, as Iona seeks to mend a planet which has been torn apart and replaced by a black hole. The PlayStation 4 version was released on 6 August 2019.

Elizabeth LaPensée is a game designer and games researcher. She is currently the Narrative Director at Twin Suns Corp, a Seattle-based AAA studio. She has previously worked as an associate professor in the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures at Michigan State University. She studies and creates video games, interactive digital media, animation, visual art, and comics to express Indigenous ways of knowing.

<i>Manifold Garden</i> 2019 puzzle video game

Manifold Garden is a puzzle video game developed by American artist William Chyr. It was released on Windows, macOS, and iOS on October 18, 2019. The player must navigate an abstract series of structures that appear to repeat into infinity, while solving a progression of puzzles. Ports for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One were released on August 18, 2020. An upgraded version of the game was released for Xbox Series X and Series S as a launch title on November 10, 2020, and an upgraded PlayStation 5 version released on May 20, 2021.

Tanya X. Short is an American video game designer. She is a co-founder of Kitfox Games, an independent video game studio in Montreal, Canada. She was lead designer for titles including Shattered Planet (2014) and Moon Hunters (2016). In 2012, she co-founded the organization Pixelles, which aims to increase gender diversity in video game development.

Sarah Horn Elmaleh is an American voice actor. Elmaleh is known for her work in the indie video games Gone Home (2013) and Where the Water Tastes Like Wine (2018) and AAA titles such as Final Fantasy XV (2016), For Honor (2017), Anthem (2019) and Hi-Fi Rush (2023). She became involved with union organizing, mainly with SAG-AFTRA, after her move to Los Angeles in 2015. In 2019, she founded the multilingual, online games conference gamedev.world with game developer Rami Ismail.
