The Espoo Cultural Centre (Finnish : Espoon kulttuurikeskus; Swedish : Esbo kulturcentrum [1] ) is a culture centre in Tapiola, Espoo, Finland. It is most famous for hosting the central library of Tapiola. Near the culture centre is the Tapiola swimming pool and the Tapiola Garden hotel.

The Espoo Cultural Centre hosts arts events, hosts activities to further culture in Espoo, offers cultural and public services, and hosts parties, meetings, fairs, and private events. The cultural centre houses the Espoo musical academy, the Espoo city orchestra Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Tapiola library, the Espoo city cultural office, the Tapiola general service point, and the Espoo folk high school. [2] Among others, the Espoo city theatre, April Jazz, the Espoo Ciné film festival, the Espoo international piano week and KuoroEspoo have hosted events in the Espoo cultural centre. [3] According to the web page of the city of Espoo, the cultural centre is "the main stage for performing arts and cultural life in Espoo". [3]

The Espoo cultural centre is located next to the Tapiola central tower, [4] between the cultural square and the central pool. The building was designed by the architect Arto Sipinen and was completed in 1989. [5] The building has two halls: Louhisali, with 300 seats, suitable for theatre, and Tapiolasali, with 800 seats, suitable for concerts. [6]

The city covers 528.03 square kilometres (203.9 sq mi) with a population of 292,913 residents in December 2020, making it the 2nd-most populous city in Finland. Espoo forms a major part of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as Greater Helsinki, home to over 1.5 million people in 2020.

Tapiola District of Espoo in Finland

Tapiola is a district of the municipality of Espoo on the south coast of Finland, and is one of the major urban centres of Espoo. It is located in the western part of Greater Helsinki. The name Tapiola is derived from Tapio, who is the forest god of Finnish mythology, especially as expressed in the Kalevala.

Ruoholahti

Ruoholahti is a quarter in Helsinki, part of the Länsisatama neighbourhood and Kampinmalmi district. The name means Grass Bay and is pronounced [ˈruoholɑhti]. Ruoholahti is located in the southwestern part of the central city area of Helsinki, close to the Lauttasaari island, and it functions as the principal connection between the Helsinki city centre and the city of Espoo to the west. As of 2005 Ruoholahti is inhabited by approx. 3300 people. The Länsisatama port is also situated in Ruoholahti.

Länsimetro

Länsimetro is an extension to the Helsinki Metro system in Finland. The grand opening for the long-awaited extension was held on 18 November 2017. Länsimetro extends the system's two lines, M1 and M2, from Central Helsinki to the neighbouring city of Espoo. The new stretch continues the lines from the existing Ruoholahti station via the island of Lauttasaari, the Aalto University Otaniemi campus and Tapiola, the terminus of line M2. Line M1 continues further west to Matinkylä. Unlike previous extensions to the Helsinki Metro system, Länsimetro runs entirely underground. The second phase is scheduled to open in 2023, and will continue the line further west to Kivenlahti.

Tapiolan urheilupuisto is a sports park in the Tapiola district of Espoo, Finland. The park includes several sports halls and football pitches, as well as the multipurpose Espoo Metro Areena. The Urheilupuisto metro station, which connects the park to the Länsimetro, was opened in 2017.

Keilaniemi is a district in the south-eastern part of Espoo, Finland. It is a high-rise business district mostly known for the numerous head offices of large corporations located there. The district includes the head offices of Tieto, Microsoft Finland, Kone, Fortum, Neste Oil, and many smaller corporations such as Rovio Entertainment. Keilaniemi rose to the position of a corporate concentration in 1976, when the Accountor Tower was built there. The 18-story building is still one of the tallest office buildings in Finland.

The Palais de la culture Amadou Hampaté Ba is the national performing arts centre for Mali, located in the capitol Bamako. Founded in 1976, the PCAHB is a public establishment, supported by the state for the preservation of traditional means of artistic expression. It is directed by the Direction Nationale des Arts et de la Culture of Mali, an arm of the Ministry of Culture, and is home to a number of Malian national institutions, including the Mali Centre of the International Theatre Institute, the National Theatre, the National Orchestra, the National Ballet Company, and the National Institute of the Arts. The current Palace of Culture was constructed in 1996. It is named for the famed Malian novelist and national hero Amadou Hampaté Ba. Tapiola swimming pool

The Tapiola swimming pool is a swimming pool centre in the district of Tapiola in Espoo, Finland. The centre was designed by Aarne Ervi and built in 1965. The building was renovated by Arkkitehdit NRT, and the renovation was completed in the 2000s. The renovation included an extension of the centre's premises, including steam saunas, jacuzzis, and a gym. In 2008, the centre was awarded the European Union Europa Nostra award for successful renovation.

WeeGee house

The WeeGee house, officially The WeeGee Exhibition Centre, is the former printing house of the Weilin+Göös publishing house situated on Ahertajantie in Tapiola, Espoo, Finland. The first two phases of the building were designed by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori and completed in 1964 and 1967. Nowadays, the protected building serves as the largest exhibition centre in Finland. The entirety of the exhibition centre was opened for the public in October 2006.

Rainer Mahlamäki Finnish architect

Rainer Mahlamäki is a Finnish architect, president of the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA) from 2007 to 2011, Professor of Contemporary Architecture at the University of Oulu, and joint partner with Ilmari Lahdelma of the Helsinki-based architecture firm Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, one of the most prolific such firms in Finland. A significant part of their work started as entries in architectural competitions, in which they have received 35 first prizes.

Ainoa (shopping centre)

Ainoa is a shopping centre located in Tapiola, Espoo, Finland. Its first phase was opened on 24 October 2013 in a 1979 building that housed the Tapiola Sokos department house until 2011. During the renovation, the building was extended both upwards and downwards.

Timo Penttilä

Timo Jussi Penttilä was one of Finland's most important modernist architects and was for over 15 years a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in Austria. He is most renowned for the design of the Helsinki City Theatre (1961–67).

Tapiola Church

Tapiola Church is a Lutheran church in the Tapiola district of Espoo, Finland. The modernist concrete building was designed by architect Aarno Ruusuvuori and opened in 1965. The church seats 600 people and is thus the largest in Espoo by capacity.

The Tapiola Sinfonietta is a city orchestra of Espoo, Finland. The orchestra consists of 41 members and its principal concert venue is Tapiola Hall at the Espoo Cultural Centre.
