Tampere is a city in the Pirkanmaa region, located in the western part of Finland. Tampere is the most populous inland city in the Nordic countries. It has a population of 244,029; the urban area has a population of 341,696; and the metropolitan area, also known as the Tampere sub-region, has a population of 393,941 in an area of 4,970 km2 (1,920 sq mi). Tampere is the second-largest urban area and third most-populous individual municipality in Finland, after the cities of Helsinki and Espoo, and the most populous Finnish city outside the Greater Helsinki area. Today, Tampere is one of the major urban, economic, and cultural hubs in the whole inland region.
Oulu is a city, municipality and a seaside resort of about 210,000 inhabitants in the region of North Ostrobothnia, Finland. It is the most populous city in northern Finland and the fifth most populous in the country after: Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere and Vantaa, and the fourth largest urban area in the country after Helsinki, Tampere and Turku. Oulu's neighbouring municipalities are: Hailuoto, Ii, Kempele, Liminka, Lumijoki, Muhos, Pudasjärvi, Tyrnävä and Utajärvi.
Nokia is a town and a municipality on the banks of the Nokianvirta River in the region of Pirkanmaa, some 15 kilometres (9 mi) west of Tampere in Finland. The distance to Tampere Airport from Nokia is 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) using road connections when circling Lake Pyhäjärvi. Its neighboring municipalities are Hämeenkyrö, Pirkkala, Sastamala, Tampere, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi. As of 28 February 2023 it has a population of 35,335 and it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the area; today, Nokia is the 33rd largest municipality of Finland by population and the second largest municipality in Pirkanmaa after Tampere.
The University of Tampere (UTA) was a public university in Tampere, Finland that was merged with Tampere University of Technology to create the new Tampere University on 1 January 2019.
Tappara is a Finnish professional ice hockey team playing in the Liiga. They play at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland. The team has won 19 Finnish league championships. The team continued the traditions of TBK, who won three national championships in a row in 1953, 1954 and 1955.
Orivesi is a town and a municipality of Finland. It is part of the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality has a population of 8,906 and covers an area of 960.09 square kilometres (370.69 sq mi) of which 160.53 km2 (61.98 sq mi) is water. The population density is 11.14 inhabitants per square kilometre (28.9/sq mi). The municipality official language is monolingually Finnish.
The Finlandia Hall is a congress and event venue in the centre of Helsinki on the Töölönlahti Bay, owned by the City of Helsinki. The building, which was designed by architect Alvar Aalto, was completed in 1971. Every detail in the building is designed by Aalto. The designs were completed in 1962, with building taking place between 1967 and 1971. The Congress Wing was designed in 1970 and built in 1973–1975. In 2011, the building was expanded with new exhibition and meeting facilities. Finlandia Hall is known as the venue for the OSCE Summit held in August 1975, attended by 35 world leaders, including the leader of the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev, and the President of the United States, Gerald Ford.
Tampere Central Station is a functionalist building in Tampere, Finland, designed by Eero Seppälä and Otto Flodin, completed in 1936. The station is one of the most important railway stations in Finland. In 2015, the Tampere Central Station was the second busiest railway station in Finland in terms of numbers of passengers, after the Helsinki Central Station.
Nokia Arena is an indoor arena in Tampere, Finland. It hosts ice hockey games, including the 2022 Men's World Championship, and large cultural events. It is also the home arena of Ilves and Tappara of the SM-liiga. Its construction was approved by the City Council of Tampere on 19 May 2010. The arena was officially opened on 3 December 2021.
Kalervo Juhani Kummola is a Finnish ice hockey executive, businessman, and politician. He co-founded the hockey club Kiekko-67 at age 21, was later marketing director for HC Turun Palloseura, and chief executive officer of the SM-liiga. Becoming a board member of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association in 1975, he was elected vice-president in 1990, and served as president from 1997 to 2016. He helped organize multiple World Championships hosted in Finland, was an International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) vice-president from 2003 to 2021, and chairman of the Finnish Olympic Committee from 2005 to 2016.
Ella Juulia Junnila is a Finnish high jumper, who represents Tampereen Pyrintö. She has previously represented Janakkalan Jana and Vammalan seudun Voima. She represented Finland in 2018 European Athletics Championships in high jump and finished 17th with a result of 186 cm. She won a bronze medal at the 2019 European Athletics U23 Championships with a result of 192 cm.
Hallituskatu is an east–west street running through the districts of Nalkala and Kaakinmaa, in the centre of Tampere, Finland. Its end point in the east is the cartboard factory area of Metsä Board Tako.
Tulli is a district in the center of Tampere, Finland. It takes its name from the Customs House (Tullikamari) completed in 1901 and the associated Pakkahuone packing house. Due to the proximity of the railway yard, storage, office and production facilities were built in the area from the end of the 19th century. A town plan was established for the area in 1900.
Näsilinna is a neo-baroque palace on Näsikallio in Tampere, Finland. It was built by Peter von Nottbeck, son of Wilhelm von Nottbeck, a St. Petersburg-based industrial manager of Finlayson. The original name of the palace, completed in 1898, was Milavida. The building was designed by architect Karl August Wrede. The true meaning and history of the name Milavida is unknown.
Ratina is a shopping center in Finland, opened in the heart of Tampere on 19 April 2018, construction of which began in April 2015. Ratina is Tampere's largest shopping center with 53,000 square meters of retail space, offering groceries, fashion, interior design, wellness and leisure services, as well as cafés and restaurants. Under it, a parking space for more than 1,200 cars has been built, which is the largest parking garage in the center of Tampere.
The Tampere Central Fire Station is a fire station located at Satakunnankatu 16 in the Jussinkylä, Tampere, Finland, on the eastern shore of Tammerkoski. The Art Nouveau-style fire station building, completed in 1908, was designed by architect Wivi Lönn.
Pirkankatu is a busy, east–west street in Tampere, Finland, which forms the southern border of the Amuri district. The districts of Kaakinmaa and Pyynikinrinne are located south of the street. To the east, the end of Pirkankatu is the Hämeenpuisto park, in the middle stages of which it connects to Hämeenkatu. In the west, on the border of Pispala, Pirkankatu becomes the Pispala Highway.
Plevna is a former industrial building located in the neighbourhood of Finlayson in central Tampere, Finland, hosting a Finnkino movie theatre, the brewery restaurant Plevna and the brewery Koskipanimo.
The Tampere Police Station is a police station located in the Ratina district in Tampere, Finland, and also the administrative center of the Central Finland Police Department. The police station is also used by the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (SUPO). There are about 400 police officers working there and about 50 others. The police station consists of two buildings located near the Tampere Bus Station along the Hatanpää Highway and Sorinkatu streets; due to this, in Tampere colloquially, the police station and its surroundings are also known as Sori by locals.
