Esports at the Southeast Asian Games

Esports is one of the newly-introduced sports at the biennial Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) which has been competed since its inaugural edition at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

History

It was in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines that esports was first featured as a medal event in an International Olympic Committee-sanctioned multi-sport event. Prior to this, esports was featured in the 2018 Asian Games as a demonstration event. [1]

Esports is among the sports to be played at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam. [2] Vietnam expanded the roster of game titles to be featured to eight from six with ten gold medals to be contested. [3]

The tournament consists of different teams from different countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore, Vietnam, and Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.

MLBB Southeast Asia Cup 2019 was the third season of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang annual SEA tournament MSC. It was held at Smart Araneta Coliseum with a total prize pool of US$120,000 from June 19–23, 2019. The event was hosted by Eruption, Faraz Shababi, Fiera Fendi, and Serahline.

Esports at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games took place at National Convention Center in Hanoi, Vietnam from 13 to 22 May 2022. It will be the second esports contest as a medal event in a multi-sport competition sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee.

The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship is the annual professional Mobile Legends: Bang Bang world esports championship tournament for the game wherein teams worldwide would be facing off each other to become the world champion for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The yearly tournament is presented by Moonton and has been held four times.

Esports will be one of the 37 sports to be played at the 2022 Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China from 23 September 2023 to 8 October 2023. This will be first occasion where Esports will be an official medal event at Asian Games and the third time in a Multi-sport event with last being in 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines and 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam. At the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, five games were included as demonstration titles. In 2022, there will be total of 8 medal events and 2 demonstration events.

Esports at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games is set to take place in around May 2023 in Cambodia.
