Essayons was a tugboat of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Her mission with the Corps was to support the installation of breakwaters and piers, and the dredging of harbors on Lake Superior. She was built in 1908 and served with the Army until 1949, when she was sold to the Zenith Dredge Company. Essayons continued her support of port construction and maintenance under her new owner until the mid 1960s. In 1994 she was sold again, this time to a local businessman, who hoped to convert her into a floating Bed and Breakfast. This plan never came to fruition and she sank at her moorings in Duluth Harbor in 2009.
The Army Corps of Engineers was charged with building breakwaters and piers, and dredging in the port of Duluth. [1] It expected to do some of this work in the winter, when the ice on Lake Superior provided a natural breakwater to protect the work in process. It designed Essayons to be exceptionally robust in order to operate in difficult winter conditions. [2]
Essayons was built by the Racine Boat Manufacturing Company in Muskegon, Michigan. She was launched on August 21, 1908. [3] A further two months was required to install her machinery and topside equipment. [4] Her steam engine was built by Montague Iron Works and installed in Muskegon. It was a double-expansion engine with 16 and 34-inch cylinders, the pistons having a 26-inch stroke. [5] It produced 450 horsepower. [6] Essayons was towed to Ferrysburg, Michigan to have her coal-fired boiler installed. [2] Her maximum speed was 11.5 knots. [7] Her original cost was $35,950. [8]
Essayons was 85.5 feet (26.1 m) long and had a beam of 21 feet (6.4 m). Her draft was 10.5 feet (3.2 m). Her hull was constructed of steel plates. In order to strengthen her to break thin ice during her winter work, her bow was built of two layers of steel plates. The glass in her portholes was 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) thick to withstand gale winds. [2] She was documented at 117 gross and 42 net registered tons. [9] Her displacement was 190 tons. [10]
She was crewed by 2 officers and 7 men. [11] Sleeping accommodations were provided for all nine crew. [12]
Essayons was at least the second vessel of that name to serve with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. An earlier Essayons was built in 1868 to dredge the mouth of the Mississippi. "Essayons" is the motto of the Corps of Engineers. It is a French word which means "Let us try."
Essayons was assigned to the Duluth District of the Army Corps of Engineers. She arrived at her new home port at the beginning of December 1908. The tug was not quite complete, but the Army Corps was eager to get her to Duluth before Lake Superior froze. The new tug found immediate use. The steamer Northern Queen was escorted back to Duluth for repairs by Essayons in December 1908 after being damaged in a collision. [13]
Essayons' primary job was to support Army Corps of Engineers projects in Lake Superior. She towed derricks, dredges, pile drivers, and other floating construction equipment to their work sites. She towed barges filled with gravel and rock from shore to where breakwaters were built. She towed barges filled with dredging spoil away from shallow water.
Among her first jobs was a major renovation of the port of Duluth. In conjunction with two floating derricks, Essayons removed old timber piers and placed over 20,000 tons of stone as a breakwater. [14] [15] She also participated in dredging channels at Grand Marais, Michigan [16] and Ontonagon, Michigan. [17] Occasionally, her work took her beyond Lake Superior, as in 1934, when she assisted in dredging near Sandusky. [18]
The tug's working routine was punctuated by a few notable events. On April 22, 1911 her crew rescued two fishermen whose boat sank about a mile into Lake Superior. [19] On March 29, 1930 Essayons was the first vessel to pass under the new aerial lift bridge between Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin. [20] Essayons underwent a major refit in 1935. In January of that year, a $25,581contract was awarded to Marine Iron and Shipbuilding Company of Duluth for work on the tug, including maintenance of the boiler. [21] [17]
In November 1948 the Army Corps of Engineers announced its intention to sell Essayons to the highest bidder. [8] She was purchased by the Zenith Dredge Company of Duluth. It appears that the transaction closed quickly since Essayons was documented as belonging to her new owner in 1949. [6]
Zenith Dredge Company was engaged in civil construction of ports, building breakwaters, piers, and dredging. It bid on and won [22] [23] [24] contracts from the Army Corps of Engineers and private firms to do this work. Thus, it appears that Essayons continued to do the same sort of work as a contractor that she did when she was owned by the Corps. Among these projects was dredging the river at Ontonagon, Michigan in July 1965, a project she had done as an Army vessel thirty years earlier. [25]
Zenith Dredge continued to sail Essayons using her original steam engine. She was taking on coal in Duluth Harbor in December 1962 when her load shifted. The tug listed to port and took on water. A crane was required to raise her and return her to an even keel. [26] It is not clear that this event precipitated Essayons' retirement, but in 1963 Zenith Dredge bought a replacement tug for its fleet. [27] One source reports that Essayons was finally retired due to persistent engine overheating in 1965, but she remained documented until at least 1972, suggesting that she may have been used occasionally. [28] [29]
The tug was purchased by Duluth businessman Hobart Finn, in 1994. She was opened to the public as a coffee shop and gift store, [28] but Finn hoped to convert her to a bed-and-breakfast hotel. Little progress was made to that end and she was vandalized in 1997 and 2004, causing thousands of dollars of damage. [30]
On March 23, 2009 Essayons sank at her moorings at the Duluth Timber Company slip and came to rest on the bottom in 20 feet (6.1 m) of water. [31] [32] She has never been raised.
Essayons' original steam engine, still bearing its Montague Iron Works plate, was donated to the Lake Superior Maritime Museum in Duluth by Zenith Dredge. Her name has been carried on by two Army Corps of Engineers dredges, the USAV Essayons built in 1949, and after that ship's retirement, another USAV Essayons built in 1982.
The Aerial Lift Bridge, earlier known as the Aerial Bridge or Aerial Ferry Bridge, is a landmark in the port city of Duluth, Minnesota. The span began life in 1905 as the United States' first transporter bridge: Only one other was ever constructed in the country, Sky Ride in Chicago. The span was converted in 1929–1930 to a vertical-lift bridge – also rather uncommon, although there are six such bridges along Ontario's Welland Canal – and continues to operate today. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1973. The bridge is owned and operated by the City of Duluth. The United States Army Corps of Engineers maintains a nearby maritime museum.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Duluth Vessel Yard is a federal port facility in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It houses the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) resources used to maintain the harbors of the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin. It was established on Minnesota Point in 1903, though most of its present configuration dates to a flurry of construction in 1941.
Edna G is a tugboat which worked the Great Lakes and is now preserved as a museum ship. Edna G was built by the Cleveland Shipbuilding Company in 1896 for the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad at a cost $35,397.50. She was named for the daughter of J. L. Greatsinger, president of the railroad.
The Mataafa Storm of 1905, was a storm that occurred on the Great Lakes on November 27–28, 1905. The system moved across the Great Basin with moderate depth on November 26 and November 27, then east-northeastward across the Great Lakes on November 28. Fresh east winds were forecast for the afternoon and evening of November 27, with storm warnings in effect by the morning of November 28. Storm-force winds and heavy snows accompanied the cyclone's passage. The storm, named after the steamship Mataafa, ended up destroying or damaging about 29 vessels, killing 36 seamen, and causing shipping losses of US$ 3.567 million on Lake Superior.
Samuel P. Ely is a shipwreck in Two Harbors, Minnesota listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was a schooner that sailed the Great Lakes carrying iron ore, coal, and other bulk freight. She was built in 1869 and was a fairly typical example of the 200-foot schooner built in the 1870s, though she was reinforced for the demands of carrying iron ore.
The Ontonagon Harbor Piers Historic District is historic shipping structure located on the Ontonagon River at Lake Superior in Ontonagon, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
The Duluth Ship Canal is an artificial canal cut through Minnesota Point, providing direct access to Duluth harbor from Lake Superior. Begun privately in 1871, it was put under federal supervision and maintenance several years later. It is still an important component of the harbor facilities.
SS Onoko was an iron hulled Great Lakes freighter. She was launched in 1882 in Cleveland, Ohio as hull number #4, and sank on September 14, 1915 in Lake Superior near Knife River, Minnesota. Onoko is thought to be the prototype for every single steel hulled Great Lakes Bulk carrier that ever sailed. These vessels made possible the cheap transport of bulk cargoes such as iron ore, coal and limestone. Her wreckage still remains on the bottom of Lake Superior and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
The Niagara was a large wooden tugboat that sank on June 4, 1904 on Lake Superior near the town of Duluth, Minnesota, Lake County, Minnesota after running aground near Knife River. On April 14, 1994 the wreck of the Niagara was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The SS Muskegon was a wooden hulled American passenger and package freight vessel that burned down on October 6, 1910 off the coast of Michigan City, Indiana in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States while unloading a cargo of sand. On April 26, 1989 the remains of the Muskegon were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Harriet B. was a wooden-hulled barge that served on the Great Lakes of North America, originally as the railroad ferry Shenango No.2, then a bulk carrier and finally as an unpowered barge. She sank four miles off Two Harbors, Minnesota on May 3, 1922 after being rammed by the steel freighter Quincy A. Shaw. Her wreck was accidentally located upright and intact in 2005 in 656 feet (200 m) of water. On August 9, 2018 the wreck of the Harriet B. was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
SS Selah Chamberlain was a wooden hulled Great Lakes freighter that sank in Lake Michigan in 1886, 6 miles (10 km) off the coast of Sheboygan, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, United States after being rammed by the steamer John Pridgeon Jr. with the loss of five lives. On January 7, 2019, the wreck of Selah Chamberlain was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was given the reference number 100003288. She was the first shipwreck listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
104 was an American whaleback barge in service between 1890 and 1898. The fourth whaleback constructed, she was built between October 1889 and February 1890, in Duluth, Minnesota by Alexander McDougall's American Steel Barge Company, for McDougall's fleet of the same name, based in Buffalo, New York. She was a whaleback, a class of distinctive, experimental ship designed and built by McDougall. The whalebacks were designed to be more stable in high seas. They had rounded decks, and lacked the normal straight sides seen on traditional lake freighters. 104 entered service on April 21, hauling iron ore from Two Harbors, Minnesota.
USAVEssayons is a hopper dredge of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Her primary mission is to maintain the entrance bars, rivers, and harbors along the coasts of Alaska, Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Washington. In emergencies, she can also be deployed to the Mississippi River. She is assigned to the Portland District of the Army Corps of Engineers. Her homeport is Portland, Oregon. She was launched in 1982 and remains in service.
USAVEssayons was a hopper dredge of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. At the time of her construction, she was the largest hopper dredge ever built. She was the flagship of the Army Corps of Engineers dredge fleet. Her primary mission was to maintain the entrance to New York Harbor and other East Coast ports, but she was employed all around the United States and at several international locations. She was launched in 1949 and retired in 1980.
Essayons was a dredge boat of the United States Army Corps of Engineers built to clear navigable channels at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The ship was launched in 1868. Her design was unusual and ultimately not successful. She was mechanically unreliable, and spent much of her career undergoing repairs and upgrades to improve her performance. She was sold by the Corps of Engineers in 1882. It is not clear that she had any further employment.
