Estadio Universidad del Mar is the main tennis court in La Serena, Chile. Built in 2007, it currently holds 10,000 spectators. It hosts the La Serena Open on the ATP Challenger Series as well as Davis Cup matches.

The Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) is an astronomical observatory located on Cerro Tololo in the Coquimbo Region of northern Chile, with additional facilities located on Cerro Pachón about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the southeast. It is within the Coquimbo Region and approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) east of La Serena, where support facilities are located. The site was identified by a team of scientists from Chile and the United States in 1959, and it was selected in 1962. Construction began in 1963 and regular astronomical observations commenced in 1965. Construction of large buildings on Cerro Tololo ended with the completion of the Víctor Blanco Telescope in 1974, but smaller facilities have been built since then. Cerro Pachón is still under development, with two large telescopes inaugurated since 2000, and one in the early stages of construction.

The club was founded 9 December 1955 and plays in the first division of the Chilean football league. Their home games are played at the La Portada stadium, which has a capacity of 17,194 seats. Their biggest rival is Coquimbo Unido. They are nicknamed "Los Papayeros", because of the papayas that are grown near La Serena in the Elqui Valley.

Aeronor Flight 304

Aeronor Flight 304 was a Chilean domestic flight between the cities of Santiago and Antofagasta with two intermediate stops. On December 9, 1982, the Fairchild F-27 operating the flight crashed near La Florida Airport, in the Chilean city of La Serena. All 46 passengers and crew on board died.

Serena Williams was the defending champion, and she successfully defended her title, defeating Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–5, 6–7(6–8), 6–1, to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2013 US Open in a rematch of the previous year's final. Just like the previous year, Williams only dropped one set the entire tournament, to Azarenka in the final. By winning the tournament, Williams won her fifth US open crown and her seventeenth grand slam singles title.
