Eugene Ashley High School is a high school just outside Wilmington, North Carolina, located in the New Hanover County School District. The facility was opened in the New Hanover County Veteran's Park in 2001. [1] The school was named after Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Eugene Ashley, Jr., a native of Wilmington who died at age 37 in the battle of Lang Vei during the Vietnam War. [1]

Academics

Ashley High School is home to the Marine Science Academy [5] which is a partnership with UNCW that allows students to study college level oceanography and biology, and which requires students to participate in internships through UNCW and CFCC. [5] Ashley students are also able to take dual enrollment classes through Cape Fear Community College. [6] In addition, students have a wide range of Advanced Placement classes to choose from. The Eugene Ashley High School appears in several One Tree Hill episodes, and the TV movies Teen Spirit, and Red Zone. [9] The film The Marc Pease Experience. The television show Eastbound & Down filmed parts of Season 4, Episode 8 in the gym and outside the school. [10]

The School Enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year is about 1900. Isaac Bear Early College High School, also called Isaac Bear, is a selective-enrollment school at 630 MacMillan Avenue, Wilmington, North Carolina. The premises are situated on UNCW campus and were founded in the auditorium of Annie H. Snipes Elementary school in the year 2006. New Hanover County Schools operates this school with the support of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the Gates Foundation. Students must apply to attend this school; no more than 100 submissions are accepted per year. As of the 2008–2009 school year, only 62–63 students were accepted. The program allows for students to work and earn up to 60 college credits, which, on average, are worth about $15,210. Michael Scott Adams was an American conservative political columnist, writer and professor of criminology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He became known for his outspoken opinions, frequently attracting controversy. When he did not receive a promotion to full professor, he filed a lawsuit against the university and eventually won. After many conflicts with students and national coverage of his controversial social media and blog posts, public pressure to have him removed grew and he was eventually asked to retire. Twenty-one days after reaching a retirement settlement with the university, he was found dead in his home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
