Pine Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) in Humboldt County, California, United States, adjacent to Eureka. The population was 3,131 at the 2010 census, up from 3,108 at the 2000 census. Pine Hills includes areas like Ridgewood and areas as far south as the small neighborhood of Elk River. An area near this artificial census construct is called Pine Hill by Local government agencies and officials. Pine Hill is a much smaller area than "Pine Hills" and as defined by local agencies is actually within an adjacent CDP named Bayview.

Due to conditions at the Bar, only pilots trained and employed by the District are used to bring vessels beyond a certain size into or out of the harbor unless the ship's pilot has proper certification.

Bracut is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County, California. It is located on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Arcata, at an elevation of 16 feet. The name originated as a contraction of the railway cut through Brainard hill in the Humboldt Bay salt marsh. Railway trestle work originally connected the hill south to Eureka and north to Arcata. Much of the hill was subsequently excavated to provide fill to replace the original trestle work; and the railway fill prism became a dike encouraging conversion of the inland salt marsh to pasture land. The leveled hill is now the site of several large structures remaining from previous lumber operations, a District 1 CalTrans yard, and a KOA campground.

The trees in the area are storied to have been some of the largest coast redwoods to have ever existed. Elk River originates at 2,000 feet (610 m) elevation in forested highlands southeast of Eureka, California. North and south forks combine to flow 15 miles (24 km) into Humboldt Bay on the south edge of Eureka. The river was called Ka-sha-reh by the Wiyot people; but received its present name after Josiah Gregg's party enjoyed a meal of elk meat near the river on Christmas, 1849.
