The European Competition is a student competition in which students of all ages submit creative, artistic, or written pieces of work on the activities of the European Union. [1] Tendered by European Movement Germany, it is the oldest student competition in Germany. It was first launched as an essay competition in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1953. Only one year later, all other German federal states joined the initiative. [2] The contest is one of the earliest transnational projects on civic education. Today, it is implemented in about fifteen countries. [3]
Each year, an average of 75,000 students take part in the contest. The topics are determined by four modules which are broken down by age and oriented towards the theme of the European Year, launched annually by the European Union. The requirements demand that all submitted pieces of work account for a European perspective. Societal, economic, political, and cultural aspects are central to the competition. However, the way in which the topics are dealt with is up to the contestants.
The Kultusministerkonferenz, a voluntary consortium of the German federal education ministers, appoints a governing committee that establishes the guidelines of the competition.
Being a proven instrument of practical education, the European Competition enables German schools to fulfil their European educational mandate as set out by the Kultusministerkonferenz. As a themed competition that is addressed towards all age groups and types of school the European Competition stimulates an in-depth engagement with European topics and questions. The contest directs the students’ – but also the teachers’ – perception towards the European dimension of diverse subject-matters and teaching contents.
Task and methodology offer teachers the possibility to explore the European dimension of various subject-matters during class sessions. The themes as set out in the modules indicate where European dynamics become effective and where European decisions are required. They furthermore illustrate that in many cases only collective action can lead to a success. Through the students’ independent and creative engagement with common values, aims, challenges, and possibilities of European integration, the contest aims at contributing to the creation of a European awareness. Another goal is to enable young people to actively perform their future role as citizens of the European Union.
From the beginning of the school year in August or September until the following February, entries to the competition can be prepared and submitted. Subsequently, they are presented to a jury in the respective federal state, which may award prices and recommends the best works to a national jury. This committee usually convenes in March and publishes the list of laureates in April. The prizes are awarded in the federal states, often arranged around the Europe Days in May.

The European Competition is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Foreign Office. It is also supported by the Kultusministerkonferenz, the Ministries of Culture and Education as well as the Senate Administrations of the German federal states, and the Federal Press Office .
In order to support transnational collaboration between pupils, a new online branch of the European Competition was established in 2012 by cooperating with eTwinning. School classes from different European countries can work collaboratively on the tasks of the Competition. The project kits are adapted to the different age groups and to the specific work conditions in the TwinSpace.

Abitur, often shortened colloquially to Abi, is a qualification granted at the end of secondary education in Germany. It is conferred on students who pass their final exams at the end of ISCED 3, usually after twelve or thirteen years of schooling. In German, the term Abitur has roots in the archaic word Abiturium, which in turn was derived from the Latin abiturus.

Primary school and other comprehensive or compulsory education is free in many countries. Tertiary education is also free in certain countries, including post-graduate studies in the Nordic countries. The Ministry provides funding for research projects and institutions and sets general educational policy. It also provides student loans in Germany. However, a large part of educational policy in Germany is decided at the state level, strongly limiting the influence of the ministry in educational matters.

The European History Network has run a number of projects under the banner of the Creating Links and Overviews for a New History Agenda (CLIOH) since 1988, including CLIOH, CLIOHnet and CLIOHnet2. Both CLIOHRES and CLIOH-WORLD are currently in operation as of December 2011. It was initially founded as the ECTS History Network, a pilot project of the ECTS.
In the curriculum of the Waldorf schools, much of the education in academic subjects takes place in blocks, generally of 3–5 weeks duration. Each pupil generally writes and illustrates a self-created textbook representing the material learned in the block. The youth rights movement seeks to grant the rights to young people that are traditionally reserved for adults, due to having reached a specific age or sufficient maturity. This is closely akin to the notion of evolving capacities within the children's rights movement, but the youth rights movement differs from the children's rights movement in that the latter places emphasis on the welfare and protection of children through the actions and decisions of adults, while the youth rights movement seeks to grant youth the liberty to make their own decisions autonomously in the ways adults are permitted to, or to lower the legal minimum ages at which such rights are acquired, such as the age of majority and the voting age.
The George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies is a bi-national United States Department of Defense and Federal Ministry of Defence (Germany) security and defense studies institute. When the Marshall Center was founded in 1993, its mission was to create a more stable security environment by advancing democratic institutions and relationships, especially in the field of defense; promoting active, peaceful, security cooperation; and enhancing enduring partnerships among the nations of North America, Europe, and Eurasia. As of Oct. 1, 2014, the Marshall Center's regional mission changed to a transnational one based on an Office of the Secretary of Defense directive to change from a European to a global participants' base.
The Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (engl.: German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference) is an official German language certificate of the German education authorities and the Foreign Office (Germany) certifying levels of knowledge of the German language in schools worldwide. The program, originally intended to stimulate interest in German has run since 1973 and, different from the equivalent certificates of the Goethe Institute, is meant for students at officially recognized schools abroad, either Diploma schools or German Schools Abroad. The program prepares the participants for a study in Germany in matters of language and cultural issues. It finishes with an exam and a certification on language competencies on level A2/B1 or B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The certificate together with national school leaving examinations entitles foreign students to apply for university entry in Germany.
The Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung is a German federal authority for evaluating and rating film and media, located at Biebrich Palace in Wiesbaden. It was founded by resolution on August 20, 1951 by a regular assembly of all German state ministers of education (Kultusministerkonferenz). The FBW, overseen by the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts, renders an expert opinion on films. Its two certification marks for outstanding quality are "worthwhile" (Wertvoll) and "especially worthwhile".
A Sex education curriculum is a sex education program encompassing the methods, materials, and assessments exercised to inform individuals of the issues relating to human sexuality, including human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, reproductive health, emotional relations, reproductive rights and responsibilities, abstinence, birth control, and other aspects of human sexual behavior. The World Forum for Democracy is a gathering each November in Strasbourg, France to debate the complex challenges facing democracies today and foster democratic innovation. The Forum is hosted by the Council of Europe and brings together members of civil society, political leaders and representatives of business, academia, media and professional groups. Anabin is a database of the German government that provides information about the accreditation and acceptance of foreign third-level degrees. It is the binding reference for German administrations, employers and private individuals to validate degrees. Within the European Union, all degrees by all member countries are inter-acceptable therefore Anabin is a reference mostly for non-European degrees.
