Everett "Fitz" Fitzhugh (born 1989) is an American sportscaster who is the radio play-by-play announcer for the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League.

Early life

Fitzhugh is African American. He was born in Detroit and was adopted by his mother, a single parent. He grew up in northwest Detroit. He attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Bowling Green State University. He first developed an interest in hockey when, as a third grader, he watched a Detroit Red Wings–Edmonton Oilers game and noticed that the Oilers had two Black players, Mike Grier and Georges Laraque. ECHL career

He has been the play-by-play announcer for the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones and for the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League, and the play-by-play announcer and color commentator for the Bowling Green Falcons. [1] [2] Fitzhugh has also served as the Cyclones' director of media relations. He received the ECHL Award of Excellence for Media Relations in 2017, following the completion of his second year in the league. He was also on the crew for the 2018 ECHL All-Star Game on NHL Network.

In 2018, at John Walton's invitation, he announced play-by-play for a Washington Capitals preseason game against the Boston Bruins. [3] [4] [2]

In February 2020, Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic reported that Fitzhugh was the only Black play-by-play announcer at any professional level of North American ice hockey. Kristen Ropp, the Cyclones' general manager and vice president, praised his work ethic and his willingness to play multiple roles to support and promote the team. Clark wrote, "The day an NHL club hires Fitzhugh to become their play-by-play announcer will become a landmark moment for a sport that has grappled with constructs like diversity." [3]

Seattle Kraken

Tod Leiweke, the Kraken's CEO, personally reached out to Fitzhugh after reading The Athletic's profile of him as an ECHL announcer. [5] Leiweke received "a glowing recommendation" for Fitzhugh from retired NBC NHL announcer Mike Emrick. The team hired Fitzhugh as its first team broadcaster in August 2020. [6] He became the first full-time African American broadcaster in NHL history. [4] The Seattle Times disabled its comments on its story about Fitzhugh's hiring; an editor's note blamed "too many comments violating our code of conduct." [1]

In 2020, Penguin Random House Canada hired Fitzhugh to narrate the audiobook of Willie O'Ree’s autobiography, Willie: The Game-Changing Story of the NHL's First Black Player. Fitzhugh recorded the audiobook in four days at a studio in downtown Cincinnati, just before moving to Seattle to begin working for the Kraken. [7]

Fitzhugh has appeared at public speaking engagements and in promotional videos for the Kraken. In February 2021, a reporter wrote that the Kraken's YouTube channel "is nearly the Fitz show with AMAs, interviews, and a pre-draft show greeting would-be fans", largely hosted by Fitzhugh. [8]

On February 17, 2022, Fitzhugh and J. T. Brown called the Kraken's game against the Winnipeg Jets on Root Sports Northwest. The pairing was the first all-Black TV broadcast in NHL history. [9] [10]

Fitzhugh married Shelly Pinto on October 15, 2021. [1]

His broadcasting inspirations include Detroit announcers Ernie Harwell, George Blaha, Ken Daniels, and Mickey Redmond, and the broadcasters on Hockey Night in Canada , which is available on CBET in Detroit. [1]

The 2021–22 NHL season was the 105th season of operation of the National Hockey League (NHL). The league expanded to 32 teams with the addition of the Seattle Kraken. The league had an October-to-April regular season scheduling and a full 82-game regular season for the first time since the 2018–19 NHL season as the previous two NHL seasons were shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league also restored its pre-COVID-19 Eastern and Western conferences. The season began on October 12.

The 2021–22 Seattle Kraken season was the inaugural season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. They played their home games at Climate Pledge Arena. The Kraken played their first regular season game on October 12, 2021 against the Vegas Golden Knights, a 4–3 loss on the road. In their second game just two days later, the Kraken earned their first win in franchise history, defeating the Nashville Predators 4–3 in an away game. The Kraken played their first home game on October 23, against the Vancouver Canucks, a 4–2 loss.

Ice hockey in Seattle, Washington, includes professional teams as early as 1915, such as the Seattle Metropolitans, the first United States-based team to win the Stanley Cup. The city has been represented by various teams in the iterations of the Western Hockey League (WHL) since 1944, of which the major junior Seattle Thunderbirds are the latest. Presently, the city has a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise, the Seattle Kraken, who began play in the 2021–22 season.

Eustace King is a sports agent and co-creator of O2K Sports Management. Before O2K, King began his sports career as a goaltender for the Omaha Lancers and Dubuque Fighting Saints from 1989 to 1992. With the United States Hockey League teams, King won the Clark Cup twice with the Lancers while reaching the finals of the Clark Cup once with the Fighting Saints. King continued his goaltending career as part of the Miami Redskins men's ice hockey team in Ohio. As a Central Collegiate Hockey Association goalie from 1992 to 1996, King held the Miami season record in goals against average during the 1995–96 season.

John Frederick Utendale was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, ice hockey coach, and college professor. He signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings in 1955, becoming the first Black man to sign a contract with a National Hockey League team. Utendale later became a professor at Western Washington State College as the first Black faculty member of the school's Woodring College of Education.

Jack Michaels is an American ice hockey announcer who is currently the play-by-play announcer for Edmonton Oilers broadcasts on 630 CHED and Sportsnet television. He was previously the announcer for the Colorado Gold Kings of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) from 1999 to 2002, and the Alaska Aces of the ECHL from 2002 to 2010.

The 2022–23 AHL season was the 87th season of the American Hockey League. The regular season began on October 14, 2022, and ended on April 16, 2023. The 2023 Calder Cup playoffs followed the conclusion of the regular season, and began on April 18, 2023. They concluded on June 21 with the Hershey Bears winning their 12th Calder Cup in team history, defeating the Coachella Valley Firebirds in overtime of game seven of the finals.

The 2024–25 NHL season is the upcoming 108th season of operation of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Arizona Coyotes franchise was folded after its players and personnel were transferred to a new expansion team in Utah. The regular season is scheduled to begin on October 4, 2024, when the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils are to play the first of two games in Prague, Czech Republic, as a part of the 2024 NHL Global Series. The Stanley Cup playoffs are then planned to begin in April 2025, ending with the Stanley Cup Finals in June.
