Extortionist is an American deathcore band formed in Idaho in 2013. The band consists of vocalist Ben Hoagland, guitarist Juan Hernandez III, bassist Kip Treeman, guitarist Jared Suku, and drummer Dominic Guggino.
In 2014, the band signed to We Are Triumphant, releasing their debut EP, The Black Sheep on March 25 of that year. On February 17, 2017, the band released their debut full-length studio album, The Decline. On March 22, 2019, their sophomore album Sever The Cord, was released through Stay Sick Records. The same year, the band released their self-titled second EP, Extortionist on May 24, 2019. [3]
The band split after their final show on October 5, 2019. The band reunited in 2020, and immediately began writing new music, releasing the single "Once More in Torment" on October 5, 2021, exactly 2 years after their initial split. They currently operate in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On February 17, 2017, the band released their debut album, The Decline. The album was received well. [2]
It was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Calvin Russell of DJSM Studios. [note 1]
On March 2, 2018, they released the standalone single "Absent Ones". On August 30, 2018, drummer Nick Mayhew and guitarist Mac Rockwell left the band while on tour with The Last Ten Seconds of Life and So This is Suffering. Due to them being short two members, they were unable to complete the tour. [4]
In early 2019, the band announced their sophomore album Sever The Cord, which was released through Stay Sick Records on March 22 of that year. The album was received well, with Connor Welsh of New Transcendence giving it a 9 out of 10, [5] while Metal Noise gave it a 7 out of 10. [1] It was mixed and mastered by Mike Sahm of Dream Awake Studios. [note 2] [6]
Two months later, they released their self-titled EP, Extortionist, on May 24, 2019. The EP was written in 2018 by Hoagland and Rockwell, but was released later after Rockwell left. They agreed that the EP should be released, and the funds from the release went towards suicide prevention. [7]
On July 22, 2019, the band released a statement on their social media that they would be breaking up. They played their final tour on October 5, 2019, with Distinguisher, Dead Crown, and Straight to our Enemies in Spokane, Washington. [8]
On July 8, 2020, the band quietly got back together and began teasing new material and asking fans what music they should make. On October 5, 2021, the band released their new single "Once More in Torment", exactly 2 years after they initially split. In 2022, they have been working on new music. [9]
On May 19, 2023, they released remixed and remastered edition of their debut EP The Black Sheep for its 10 year anniversary. The edition features their former guitarist Joel Omans on the track "Rejection", and also features a bonus track called "Double Jump".
On October 5, 2023, the band officially moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, after adding the owner of Bamboo Audio, Clayton Blue to their lineup in September of the previous year. [10] 9 days later, on October 24, 2023, the band announced they had signed with Unique Leader Records and would be releasing a new EP, Devoid, on December 1. [11]
On February 21, 2024, the band announced plans on their social media to release their third album Devoid of Love & Light via Unique Leader Records on May 17, 2024. [12]
Extortionist have been categorized as nu metal, [1] beatdown hardcore, and deathcore. [2]
They are known for their signature "pangy" open snare and "dodgeball sound", which is made by slamming a metal beer keg with a baseball bat. [13] Along with this, they incorporate heavy, downtuned guitars and aggressive growls with some occasional grunge-style bridges and choruses.

Swans are an American experimental rock band formed in 1981 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. One of the few acts to emerge from the New York City-based no wave scene and stay intact into the next decade, Swans have become recognized for an ever-changing sound, exploring genres such as noise rock, post-punk, industrial and post-rock. Initially, their music was known for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. Following the addition of singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jarboe in 1986, Swans began to incorporate melody and intricacy into their music. Jarboe remained the band's only constant member except Gira and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg until their dissolution in 1997.
Edguy is a German power metal band formed in 1992 in Fulda by students Tobias Sammet, Jens Ludwig, Dominik Storch, and Dirk Sauer. Initially named after their math teacher, the band faced early rejections from record labels but persevered, releasing their unofficial debut album, Savage Poetry, in 1995. They gained wider recognition with their subsequent albums, including Kingdom of Madness (1997) and Vain Glory Opera (1998), featuring guest appearances from notable musicians. Over the years, Edguy has evolved their sound, with Sammet also launching the successful metal opera project Avantasia. The band has released multiple studio albums, including Age of the Joker (2011) and Space Police: Defenders of the Crown (2014), and has engaged in extensive touring. As of March 2020, Edguy is on hiatus while Sammet focuses on new Avantasia material.
Smile Empty Soul is an American rock band, originally from Santa Clarita, California, United States. It was started in 1998 by Sean Danielsen, Ryan Martin (bass), and Derek Gledhill (drums). Following the departure of Gledhill and Martin from the band in 2005 and 2017, respectively, Danielsen remains the only founding member still active as well as the band's primary songwriter, frontman, and leader.

The White Noise was an American punk rock band from Dallas, Texas, later based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2010 under the name Set the Sun by guitarist and vocalist David Southern and drummer Alex Summers, the band released two EPs and a series of singles while still based in Dallas. By 2013, Southern was left the sole founding member and recruited vocalist Shawn Walker and guitarist Josh "KJ" Strock. This lineup would relocate to Los Angeles and change their name to the White Noise. In total, the band released three EPs, in addition to one studio album, 2017's AM/PM.
