Eyitayo Jegede SAN, [1] is a Nigerian legal practitioner and 2019 Ondo state PDP gubernatorial aspirant.

Early life and education

Jegede was born to the family of late Chief Johnson Bosede, [2] the Odopetu of Isinkan, Akure, and Mrs C.O Jegede (née Asokeji) from Ipele town, near Owo in Ondo State, Nigeria. [3] He attended St. Stephen’s “SA” Primary School Modakeke, and was at Aquinas College Akure from 5 January 1973 to July 1978 for his Secondary Education. [4] He was a Senior Prefect at Aquinas College and took active part in Sports in the best traditions of the family. He had his Higher School Certificate Education at Christ's School Ado Ekiti and was the School Volleyball Captain both at Aquinas College, Akure and Christ School, Ado Ekiti between 1978 and 1980. [5] He also captained the University Volleyball team at the University of Lagos where he had his Law Degree Course between 1980 and 1983. [3]

After completing his higher education, he was posted to Yola, Adamawa State for his National Youth service Corps where he started his career as a legal practitioner. [3]

In the year 1984, Jegede, qualified as a lawyer after the One Year mandatory programme at the Nigeria Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

Career

Being a dynamic and seasoned Lawyer, in the year 1992, he was appointed a Notary Public by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and in the space of less than 10 years was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. [6] He was deeply and actively involved in political cases and election petition matters, an area of law where his industry and practice is noted and respected. [7]

He worked in the law firm of Murtala Aminu & Co. Yola. After twelve years practice in the law firm, six years of which he was the Head of Chambers, he established his own law firm, Tayo Jegede & Co in 1996. He was heading his law firm of Tayo Jegede & Co in Abuja and Yola before he took his previous appointment as Chief Law Officer in Ondo State. [8]

In May 2009, the dynamic Governor of Ondo State in his quest for a vibrant, dynamic and very articulate number one law officer of the state, appointed this Legal icon as the Hon. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. [9] Since his appointment as the number one law officer of the state, the Ministry of Justice has witnessed an unprecedented positive change in all ramifications. [3]

Jegede is a former Chancellor of Anglican Communion of Jalingo, Taraba State, he was once the Chancellor of Anglican Dioceses of Yola and a member of Implementation Committee of American University, Yola, Adamawa State, as well as a member, Chairman Board of Governors, ABTI Academy International School and member, Board of Trustees, Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo-State. Political career

Jegede emerged the winner of his party’s PDP primary by polling 760 votes to defeat the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the PDP in the 2012 governorship election, Hon. Saka Lawal. [10] On November 23, 2016, The Appeal Court pronounced Jegede as the gubernatorial flag bearer of his party, PDP. A position previously assumed by the billionaire and business mogul Jimoh Ibrahim. Jegede emerged the flag bearer of PDP Governorship Primary for Ondo State October 2020 election with a poll of 888 votes, he defeated the Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi who emerged the second runner-up with 657 votes.

Action Congress of Nigeria Political party

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), formerly known as Action Congress (AC), was a Nigerian political party formed via the merger of a faction of Alliance for Democracy, the Justice Party, the Advance Congress of Democrats, and several other minor political parties in September 2006. The party controlled Lagos. It was regarded as a natural successor to the progressive politics more closely associated with the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the First and Second Republics respectively. Olusegun Mimiko Nigerian politician

Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, was the senatorial candidate of the Zenith Labour Party for Ondo Central District in the 2019 election that held in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. He is a Nigerian politician who served as the 16th, and fifth civilian, Governor of Ondo State, Nigeria, from February 2009, to February 2017. The first two-term governor of Ondo state and the first Labour Party governor in Nigeria. Mimiko was previously a federal minister for housing and urban development, a secretary to the Ondo State Government, and a two-time Ondo State Commissioner for Health.

Rotimi Akeredolu Nigerian politician

Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who is currently the Governor of Ondo State, in office since 24 February 2017. His adopted prefix is "Arakunrin", while his nickname is "Aketi". He is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who became president of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2008. Akeredolu was also a Managing Partner at the law firm of Olujinmi & Akeredolu, which he co-founded with Chief Akin Olujinmi, a former Attorney General and Minister for Justice of Nigeria. On 21 July 2020, he was declared as the Ondo governorship candidate after the primary elections under the platform of the APC. He is the current Governor of Ondo State and doubles as the chairman of Southwest Governors Forum.

Mimiko received 43.79% of the total vote and won in 13 of the state's 18 LGAs, closely followed by PDP's Olusola Oke who won in two LGAs with 26.25% of total votes, while the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, who won in three LGAs came third with 24.15% of the votes. Mimiko becomes the first Incumbent governor of Ondo State to be re-elected.

The 2003 Ondo State gubernatorial election occurred on April 19, 2003. PDP's Olusegun Agagu, a former Deputy Governor to Bamidele Olumilua, won election for a first tenure, defeating Incumbent Governor, AD's Adebayo Adefarati and three other candidates.

The 2020 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held on 19 September 2020, in Edo State, and 10 October 2020, in Ondo State. The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2016. The All Progressives Congress' Rotimi Akeredolu was defending the Governor's office of Ondo while APC-turned-PDP Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was defending his office. Both won reelection, leading to no net change in terms of overall party control of governorships.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Ondo State held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Ondo State. Akinyelure Patrick Ayo representing Ondo Central, and Nicholas Tofowomo representing Ondo South both won on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (Nigeria), while Robert Ajayi Boroffice representing Ondo North won on the platform of All Progressives Congress.

The 2023 Nigerian House of Representatives elections will be held on 25 February 2023 where voters will elect members of the House of Representatives using first-past-the-post voting in all 360 federal constituencies. The last regular House elections for all districts were in 2019.
